The thought of traveling to Cali has never really crossed my mind because I really have no interest in driving 3,000+ miles across country but lately I've been feeling like I need to try out the west coast. Are there any companies that offer reimbursement for rental cars? Has anyone NOT driven to Cali and came up with other options for transportation?

Everyone's favorite Cali hospital to work for?! :geek:

I drove from NY to San Diego. Loved the trip. I took 4 days and saw sites on the way. I had my Dad travel with me to help with the driving. I paid his meals and flight home. Fun trip. I live near La Jolla in Pacfic Beach area. I actually don't have to drive anywhere except work or if I want to go into the city. People use bikes to get everywhere. I don't know of companies that provide rental cars but I'm sure some do. Another travel nurse paid to have her car sent on a truck. It was pretty expensive though. If you get a friend to travel with you and help with the driving it's worth it.

Most agencies pay a travel stipend. You can use it to ship your car and then fly there. I'm sure you can negotiate a rental car into your contract but know that it's coming out of your piece of the pie and not the agency's. You'll just have a lower pay in the other parts of your contract.

If I had a friend to do it with I would definitely be up for it, I just find it very hard to travel alone and I'm not really a fan of it.

I haven't heard of any reimbursement for cars, but like the other responder said- you can negotiate for money for that but it will come out of your pay somewhere else. The highest I've heard from other travelers traveling from east coast to west coast is about $1000 total. Shipping your car is pretty expensive too. With two drivers, we drove from Pittsburgh to Portland in 3 days, and managed to stay at decent hotels that weren't super expensive. Granted, we only got $600 for travel money, but between the gas mileage and hotels you just have to figure out if it works for you. We just bit the bullet and said we'll just make the best of it and go from there. Good luck!
