UT-Houston Fall 2007 Applicants

  1. Hey all,

Just wanted to hear who else on the board is applying for Fall 2007. I've sent everything in and just took the NET test last Saturday. Now the waiting game begins!

    Hi Paige,
I have applied for the UT Houston accelerated program which starts this summer. I will apply for the fall also, if I don't get in.
I am also looking into the ADN programs. Tomorrow I go to HCC's orientation.
Are you applying to any schools other than UT?

Good luck to you guys. I go to UT Houston and I know what you are going through. It's very smart to have back up programs, when I applied they had 1700 applications for only 130 spots and a few of my firends did not get accepted and did not have any back up schools. If you have any questions about the program or admission process please let me know.

    Hi Rocky,
Thanks, I have a few questions, if you don't mind.

Do you have an idea of minimum GPA for acceptance.
How important is the NET score.
Do you think there are any other factors that are important in the admission process.
    Thanks!

    Hi Ben Franklin,

They really do not have a minimum GPA for acceptance, they really look at the whole person. I had a 3.9 GPA and a 4.0 science GPA, was a member of my school's health professional club and had outstanding pre-nursing student awards but some of my classmates had as low a 3.4 GPA with previous healthcare experience as an LVN or medical assistant. This is the first year that they are requiring the NET so I do not know how important it is. I do know that they are really focusing on the reading comprehension section beacuse there have been studies that show how well you do on the reading may be related to how well you will do in the program and that is because there is so much reading to do in so little time especially in the fast track program. They do interview you for the fast track program and there are normally 15-20 spots for that. They do not interview for the generic BSN you have to do a questionaire. Do not be afraid to sell yourself and toot your own horn during either one because there is no spot on the applications to tell them about the awards, volunteer work, and acomplishments you have received and they will not know about it unless you tell them. They seem to be interested in if you have overcome some hardship, have previous healthcare experince, worked during your pre-reqs, or have a sound reason for wanting to be a nurse and wanting to come to UT. Before the second phase just take some time to reflect on yourself, why you want to go to UT, why you want to be a nurse, and what you have done thus far to prepare for the program so you have an idea of what you want them to know. I hope that answered your questions. I know this is really long but I know exactly how you feel. When I was applying I knew no one and had no idea what was going to happen and I just wanted information about what to expect. If you have more questions or just want to talk about it feel free to email me. Good luck!

    Rocky,
Thank you very much for taking the time to respond to my message. The information you provided was very helpful and encouraging. I was feeling a little discouraged after realizing that I would not be eligible to apply to any other schools besides UT as they were all requiring me to retake my biology courses, as they are greater than 5 years old. Unfortunately, this is not possible with my work schedule.
Thanks again for all of the help!

Hi guys! I'm a UT hopeful too! I just got a letter to interview today! I am so excited, but trying not to get my hopes up too much. My gpa is on the low side so it's a miracle I even got to the second round! (Thank you Lord!!!!) Good luck to everyone and start checking your mailboxes for an interview letter! The waiting is so hard. My backup plan is HCC, but at this point I've finished all the courses necessary so I would hate to get an ADN when I have the credits to get a BSN, but I guess fate will guide me!

Hey Rocky! Thanks for all the great info! I just got a letter for the second round so that's really great advice. Just a quick question about the interview though. On the letter it says "Please arrive in plenty of time to get comfortable with your surroundings and prepare yourself for your interview. The interview will consist of completing a questionnaire and the actual interview." This makes it sound like there will be an actual face to face interview, doesn't it? Is this how yours was worded last year or do you think they may have changed it this year with the NET testing change? I'm really hoping there is a face-to-face interview. I know they are nerve wracking, but honestly on paper I don't look so stellar but in person they will be able to see just how much I want it!

    Congratulations Cad4296!
Is this an interview for the summer (accelerated program) or the fall class?

Thank you! This is for the regular Fall BSN program. When do you get word on the accelerated program? They said for the accelerated program if you don't get in you automatically get put in the pool of applicants for the regular program so in theory you should know soon right?

How did you feel about the NET? What does UT include on it? I had to take the HESI for another school and found it very doable. I was wondering how the NET was because I got a UT interview letter also.

I just got a letter also; however, in the meantime I started at a community college...I wonder if they would accept my Fundamentals credit(s)? Have you heard of anyone transferring from another nursing program?

Thanks for your time and attention.
