A True to Nursing Movie
Actually there used to be a documentary tv show on discovery health channel called “Nurses” back in 2001. I don’t know what happened to it but while it lasted it was really good and showed the real side of nursing. The nurses where not all young and skinny but for the most part they were very experienced. One lady followed even had 20 something years of experience. I wish they would bring that show back. As a student I would watch it.

UT-Houston Fall 2007 Applicants
congratulations to all that made it into ut fall 2007!!! i am so glad to see that everyone on this thread made it in. out of the 1300 applications for both the bsn generic and bsn acc you are part of the 170 students selected. you should all be very proud of yourselves!!! to those who did not get accepted, please do not feel discouraged. continue to complete your pre-reqs as you would have done if you were accepted. even if you are not accepted initially, there are students that are in the same situation as lene is deciding between schools and will not chose to come to ut. that will leave an opening and possibly you will be accepted at that time. i can honestly say that i know at least 10 people in my class right now that got accepted the week before class started. as far as parking goes, there is no school parking. students park at the brown lot and ride the white shuttle to school($2-$6), park on the street in front of university housing and take the ut shuttle (not safe but free), or just take the bus from their home or any park and ride and ride the metrorail to fannin and pressler and walk from there. there are a few students that park in the tmc garages but that can cost $10 or more per day. carpooling is also another big option for students. once again congratulations guys. good luck to all of you. let me know if you have any questions. :welcome:

That's exactly what it means. Provisional admission is when you do not meet the requirements for full admission. Meaning you still have pre-reqs to complete and pass with at least a C. Once you complete the courses and turn in your transcript your status will be changed to full admission.

I am not sure what the attrition rate is at UT but I know that after the 1st semester we lost 13 people either through failing out, deciding nursing is not for them, or reducing their hours. I am sure that we will lose more judging by how things are going this semester. UT is a great school but it does leave a little to be desired. Don't get me wrong I love coming here and every program (TWU and PV included) has its faults. UT seems like they are open to change. I really hope that they take the feedback that the seniors that are about to graduate has given them along with us juniors so that things will be a little bit better for you guys. Here's a tip for all of you waiting for your acceptance letters: I found out that I was accepted 2 weeks before I received my acceptance letter by checking my application status on UTLINK. My status had changed from "pending" to "you have been granted provisional admission" (I had 2 more pre-reqs to take and pass). Hopefully the same will be for you too. Good Luck to all of you guys and keep us posted!!

Anyone have an "unsupportive mate"?
Hi, I went through a similar situation with my husband when I began nursing school. He would always say "All you do is go to school....why couldn't you clean the house, cook dinner etc." He had no idea how much work nursing school was and how exhausted I was feeling. The tension and resentment got so bad that I decided to go to counseling at my school. The therapist helped me to realize that he was feeling insecure about himself and our relationship. He felt that once I graduate I will no longer need him and that he could not compete with the professional status I would have acheived and he was dealing with it the only way he knew. She suggested that I begin to communicate differently, using I feel sentences and discussing with him why he felt insecure. I'm now in my second semester of nursing school and our relationship is much better. He now understands that all the work that I am putting in is for our family and is much more considerate and helpful around the house. I do not know if this is what is going on in your home but please don't let it get you down. You can do this!! Just remember how far you've come already and keep you eye on the prize. I would suggest counseling only because it was great to have someone to talk to about my feelings and helps to sort out your feelings. Keep your head up and email me if you need to talk.

Hi you guys, Congrats on your interview!!! They definetly do not interview everyone that applies. And yes according to my prof. there is an actual face to face interview now. Good luck to all of you. One word of advise, if you do not get an acceptance letter please continue to complete your pre-reqs, I cannot tell you how many people are in my class that got called the day of orientation or the first day of class and told to come.

Vastus lateralis IM site
I was told that the vastus lateralis and rectus femoris are two different IM sites. The vastus lateralis is the middle 1/3 of the thigh but the lateral aspect while the rectus femoris is mid thigh at the anterior aspect. so it's exactly what you said, vastus lateralis= mid thigh on the side of the leg and rectus femoris= mid thigh on the front of the leg.

UT-Houston Fall 2007 Applicants
Hi Ben Franklin, They really do not have a minimum GPA for acceptance, they really look at the whole person. I had a 3.9 GPA and a 4.0 science GPA, was a member of my school's health professional club and had outstanding pre-nursing student awards but some of my classmates had as low a 3.4 GPA with previous healthcare experience as an LVN or medical assistant. This is the first year that they are requiring the NET so I do not know how important it is. I do know that they are really focusing on the reading comprehension section beacuse there have been studies that show how well you do on the reading may be related to how well you will do in the program and that is because there is so much reading to do in so little time especially in the fast track program. They do interview you for the fast track program and there are normally 15-20 spots for that. They do not interview for the generic BSN you have to do a questionaire. Do not be afraid to sell yourself and toot your own horn during either one because there is no spot on the applications to tell them about the awards, volunteer work, and acomplishments you have received and they will not know about it unless you tell them. They seem to be interested in if you have overcome some hardship, have previous healthcare experince, worked during your pre-reqs, or have a sound reason for wanting to be a nurse and wanting to come to UT. Before the second phase just take some time to reflect on yourself, why you want to go to UT, why you want to be a nurse, and what you have done thus far to prepare for the program so you have an idea of what you want them to know. I hope that answered your questions. I know this is really long but I know exactly how you feel. When I was applying I knew no one and had no idea what was going to happen and I just wanted information about what to expect. If you have more questions or just want to talk about it feel free to email me. Good luck!

Good luck to you guys. I go to UT Houston and I know what you are going through. It's very smart to have back up programs, when I applied they had 1700 applications for only 130 spots and a few of my firends did not get accepted and did not have any back up schools. If you have any questions about the program or admission process please let me know.
