Still seeking *extensive orientation/preceptorship* after completing refresher course

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I'm hoping someone will be able to suggest particular, specific facilities with an RN authorized and willing to supervise my 80 hours orientation/preceptorship here in Texas.

I've completed the didactic course and only lack the 80 hours and CEUs in order to reactivate my RN license.

The TX BON does not make suggestions as to where to go in order to do this. The refresher course I took was strictly didactic. Yes, I am on my own as to obtaining the preceptorship.

Not a new student, not inexperienced, ready to get back to work.

Thank you!

Have you contacted one of the local hospitals? When I needed to do this same thing in Texas (there was no didactic course), I met with one of the unit managers and offered to work free of charge for three months to get back on track. I don't see you would have to do as extensive of a schedule since you have taken the course that is now available. I completed my "trial" and was hired by the facility...within a year I was a unit manager myself. Good luck!

Yikes. What a pickle.

Before allowing students to use their facilities for clinical practicums, Hospitals have to have contractual agreements with the school. There are scads of legal & regulatory requirements that have to be met and these are spelled out in that contract. Individuals who are seeking the same sort of arrangement will also have to have it 'blessed' by the same type of contract.

My advice would be to contact hospital nursing education departments. They usually manage student affiliation agreements, including clinical rotations. (if not, they can direct you to the right person). They can provide you with information about how to set this up.

Hi SGTex. I'm in, or could be entering, a similar situation. I am/was registered in NY as an RN. Then I took time off to be a mom and, in the meantime, moved to the Abilene TX area with my husband. I'm now looking to get back into nursing. I found all the same info on the board of nursing site for Texas... about the online didactic course from Austin CC... and the need for a 80hr preceptorship. I haven't done the course yet, but I am already lost in HOW I would (after the course) secure such a preceptorship. I'm very anxious to hear if you figured this out or not, and how. Hopefully you can post here a follow-up, and give advice to me!
