Relocating from MS to Abilene, TX

Hello everyone. I will be relocating to Abilene, Tx in a few months with hubby whose active duty Air Force. I've been doing a little research and I see there's two hospitals there. One has a inpatient rehab unit (Hendricks); I'd really be interesting in that since I've worked rehab for the last 4 years and then there's Abilene Hospital. Just wanting some input on both facilities. What about the medical facility on Dyess AFB. I saw online where there were openings there also. Any and all opinions are welcomed.

By the way, I'm Air Force Reserve and I'm sure I'll probably need more than the average 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year off since I'll more than likely travel back to Mississippi to my home base for drills until I can find something closer. My plan is to apply for a parttime position.

SusyQ, yes, I accepted the job at Hendrick Rehab and loving every minute of it. Hendrick is a great place to work and they really care about their people. I hear Abilene Regional is so so, but I can't confirm since I've never worked there. If you have any specific questions... ask away and I'll see if I could be of assistance.

Thanks Andy RN, I was wondering what they consider to be the ideal nurse they are looking for. I noticed by looking at their site that their value statement is brought up often in various ways. I also am interested in the interviewing process. How was it for you? What kind of questions did they ask? It has been years since I did an interview. Thanks.

Abilene is a lower-paying area (low $20s per hour for a new grad), but the cost of living there is low. I don't know how much experience you have, since any prior nursing experience would likely result in a higher starting offer.

I have five years of Lpn experience and just over two years of Rn experience. Im debating if I want to except the position if offered to me. The cost of living may be cheap there but I still have to pay bills, I asked the recruiter maybe she will tell me tomorrow? Maybe if they had a shift diff? I dont know? Update: I was told with my experience level they would pay 22.95/ hour with a shift diff of I think it was 3.50 an hour for night shift and there was not one offered for days. They offered a 3.50/hr shift diff for weekend days and 7.00/hr to work weekend nights. Hopes this helps the next nurse that may be curious about relocating and what not..... ; )

Hello, I am talking to someone now from a recruiting agency whom is trying to offer 2000 sign on and 3000 relocation which 3000 and 1000 (half of sign on) is given when you finish the 2 weeks. She said I would get $22.10 per hour to start and ONLY on the weekends will you get $3.50 extra per hour. No shift diff on week days. Weekend nights are $7.00 shift diff. She said extra shifts are available all of the time. She also said that they are immediatley offering tuition reimbursement because of the expansion. BUT there is a 2 year comittment. Good thing is they do offer training!!! So...it's not so bad if you want to get into ICU...

Does anyone know how it is to live there? How about CRNA schools? CRNA pay is on the low side there though.

Oh one more thing...go to salary.com....and for abilene, tx, they say the 10% is making 49K...which is like $28/hour...so this is really low pay at Hendrick. I guess for training you can't expect much more than that.
