Questions about Seton Versant RN Residency in Austin

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I have just been accepted into the Seton RN residency and can answer any questions you may have. I will also be creating a post throughout my experience in the residency. Ask away!

I am driving in from Florida for the Open House next week and am really excited for the opportunity to sell myself! PVN can you tell me what you schedule is like? I'm assuming 3-12's a week (probably nights?), and when do you fit the classroom portion into your schedule? What area are you working?

Another random question...I need to buy scrubs for my job here but I want to buy ones that will work for Seton in case I get in:) What color do you wear?

Thank you for all of your insight!

someone mentioned about the night differential how much is it?? also...is it diferent for the new nurses?

thanx

Hi PcolaRN,

I'm coming from West Palm Beach to attend the open house - Floridians in the house! Ha ha, best of luck to you!

So sorry I been hit and miss. I have been busy!! But I am determined to keep this post going because I know there are so many questions out there (I had plenty myself).

So, my schedule is basically 36 hrs a week. All nurses work 36 hr weeks. 3 12 hour shifts a week. However, for new grads in Versant, your 36 hrs is split b/w class time and time actually working in your unit. So, some weeks I work 1 12 and the rest class and some weeks I work 2 12's and the rest class. It varies. It is A LOT of info to take in but they are really patient with you and really work with you to make sure you get the skills you need. i actually work in the NICU so they basically assume you know nothing and start from there (I dont know if they start so basic with other units). They know that most schools dont have much of a NICU rotation so they start from very basic which I'm cool with.

I find myself feeling tired at the end of the week because everything is so new. It is really a huge transition to move from student to nurse. Especially these days as you not only have hospital policy but now you have HIPAA and Joint

Commission, etc. That seems to be the hardest part. Not really the skills but the policies because we all learned different things from different schools. What can the parents do or not do on your unit? what rules can you bend? who to call for this? where is this supply located? whose job is it to make sure this is done? which tasks do i do first? why are my hands shaking so much? these are the questions i find myself asking more than how do i do this skill.

any idiot can read a skill in a book. Its many other things that you cannot go to a book for that can kind of make it hard being new. Especially knowing the hospital's policy. the policies and procedures book is millions of pages long. You dont have time to read that crap! but I must say the nurses in my unit are very helpful and the versant program moves at a slow enough pace to where many of those questions get answered. I am so relieved I got into this program. I couldnt imagine going to a hospital and them just throwing me in there.

So...yeah thats about it. Plus NICU is completely different from adult units or even pedi. I almost feel like I'm in school again. When i get more time, i will relate some of my experiences on the unit. Very soon. I promise.

PS: all nurses at Seton must wear navy blue scrubs and I'm not exactly sure how much night differential is as I have not worked nights yet.

Any other questions feel free to ask. Till next time.

Holla! When are you leaving and what time did you sign up for? Best of luck to you as well!

Thank you pvnurse! I'm so glad to hear that you are enjoying the program!

Hey guys!!!! I am also applying to the Seton residency for the October cohort! I am an accelerated program in Jersey and wasn't able to make it out to the open house this past week. Anyone who went, how'd it go? Did you get any information as to when they may start to contact people after the second round of review/interviews coming up. I am confused as to whether they will be contacting people on August 1st, or if they will begin to review w/e applications are there by this date and then choose applicants they want to interview. I am hoping that because its the October cohort, the number of applicants will be slightly lower, but either way I'm doing the best possible. To the current nurse residents, I am going to be in Austin at the end on August, and wanted so ask some advice, as to whether I should try to set up something to meet with the managers in person, or what? I am hoping by then I'll know whether or not I am going to be interviewed or whether I will have to wait and apply for the Feb. cohort.... just wish getting hold of someone on the phone was easier but it is what it is...... any advice would be appreciated

Hi guys I attended the Open House event last July 19, 2011. I'm so glad I was able to talk with the hiring managers and was able to apply on the critical care field but it is under the Seton Select Program. Once selected, we will be trained for 14 weeks on one of the Seton Family of Hospitals and then fill a position once it's open.

My application was routed to the hiring managers. So do I just wait for them to call me for an interview? I remember when I handed them my resume they said they gonna call me 2-3weeks if I'm qualified for an interview.

If I get hired I would have to move from California to Austin. I hope they provide like a relocating assistance. Pls. do share your experiences applying for this residency program. I also wonder what kinds of questions do they ask.

Goodluck to all who've applied and hoping the best for us all.

I also applied for the October. I have already taken boards, and passed. I am also starting my RN-BSN in the fall. I missed the open house, and sure hope it wasn't too late to even put my app in, but I called and the machine said they were still taking applications. I did see they are having a hiring fair on August 4th. Definitely thinking about driving up there for that. Just praying I get a job...somewhere!

captain byakuya,

How long ago did you submit your app and references before the status changed to "routed". I just found out about this last week, hence why i couldn't go to the fair, but sent in my app today with all the materials and will be faxing tomorrow the NCLEX registration paper. I guess I'm just a bit nervous that even though the first round of reviews/interviews just happened and the next one isn't until next Monday, I won't have my stuff in time to be considered. I graduate from an accelerated program in a few weeks and have 2 other interviews lined up, but this is my top choice, so I am hoping that if something happens I would know before finding out form the other places. If anyone has any info on timelines please let me know! Thanks and good luck to my fellow October 2011 applicants!!!

I submitted my application last June. They emailed me that my application has been approved on July and had me filled up another application. After that I attended the Open House and handed resume to the hiring managers. Then someone from the HR called me today (July 25) that my application online has been routed to the hiring managers.

Don't feel bad I just applied today too. Although I have already graduated and taken boards so I had less paperwork to send in.
