Moving back to Texas after 5 years...gulp

U.S.A. Texas

Hi

I've been living in the UK for the last few years and am now returning to Texas. As I'm an LVN, I've not been able to nurse while in the UK. I have been working in a healthcare setting in a different capapcity though and have tried to keep my nursing knowledge up to date indirectly and I've also taken CEU's.

I don't think I have to take a refresher course because my license hasn't been inactive but I've not practiced nursing since 2005. I'm a bit nervous over what awaits me back in the States.

Does anyone know of anyone or have personal experiences of being out of nursing for a bit and then getting a job without taking a refresher course. I'm willing to be tested by a potential employer so they can see my skills are still there. Are hospitals willing to take you on as perhaps a new grad and give you an extended orientation?

I wish I could have come back to the States sooner but this was the first opportunity for me to do so.

Thanks in advance

This is from the Texas BON

Must have been employed in Nursing in the last four (4) years or held a valid Texas nursing license within the last four (4) years.

A Licensed Vocational Nurse that has not practiced in the last four years will need to apply for a Six-Month Temporary Permit and is required to complete a board approved refresher course before the license is reactivated.

I believe your license goes inactive after 4 years of not practicing. I would contact the Texas BON for clarification.

Good luck!!
