Lone Star Information Session

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi. Has anyone went to one of the information sessions given by any of the Lone Star college campuses? If so, would you mind sharing the info given at the session? I have to work during the times that they are given and wanted to see if there was any valuable application information given there?

Also does anyone know if they have a certain number of applicants that all have the same number of points, how is one chosen for acceptance? Do they go then off of the GPA of the applicants or are they just chosen in line from the computer?

TIA, I appreciate any help greatly!

Smilbig- I prefer nights, I have to work during the day. It's funny, I have 4 children 3 girls and 1 boy- their ages are 10, 8 and 4 and 4 months for my baby boy, how funny is that? Even if we get in for different times we can still keep in touch and encourage each other through the program; maybe even get together for a study session. I have taken titers for all the ones I could and am good there, I hope. I have to take my TdaP because it's almost been 10 years since I had the last. I can't get the record of it anyway because I took it at St. Lukes while I was working there and Employee Health said everything got lost in the flood. Thank goodness for titers because I would be up the creek.

Meth- Thanks for the info session tip. By the time I leave work to go to one, it will probably be over when I finally get there. What kind of advice can you offer to us students waiting to apply and/or acceptance? I would like to get started trying to get some of my supplies out of the way but think I will jinx myself but a list of what's being specifically used at Montgomery could be helpful... I know all the Lone Star campuses are different but I would think their supply list is somewhat the same.

There aren't many supplies you need. The first week of school you'll be given a lab bag with all your lab supplies in it. Our bags even had penlights and bandage scissors, so you may want to hold off on purchasing those separately.

What you actually need is:

  • A watch with a second hand. Digital watches are easier to use in this regard.
  • A decent stethoscope. Don't buy one of those piece of crap $15 sprogue prestige brand mostrosities. I recommend a Littmann Classic II SE. I hear the new design Littmann lightweights are decent, however, I used to have one of the original lightweights and I couldn't hear half the stuff I can with the classic II.
  • I recommend a pair of cheap trauma shears. I'm not a fan of the itty bitty bandage scissors and I find the trauma sheers much more useful for cutting through things in a jiffy.
  • I love having my PDA with lots of medical program on it, but if you're not tech savy a good drug book will be easier to use.
  • Scrubs: white top, teal pants. Ugly as heck. Patch goes on left shoulder- but I'm not sure if they have any "Lone Star" versus NHMCCD patches yet. Mine still say NHMCCD. All the local scrub shops have the patches (PRN, scrubs etc).
  • Solid white shoes. If you're a guy, good luck finding something comfortable and decent looking that meets this requirement.

That's about it, really. Pens (black ink only), paper, non-scientific calculator, the usual school supplies. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Thanks so much, that is really helpful. Good luck to you in the rest of your program!

So it's official, I have officially turned in my application for Kingwood today. My official points were 11.7448. :yeah: I talked to the director earlier this week and she said last Spring cut off was 11.2 but as always, it changes each semester. She also said that they are accepting 60 students for the program. I'm hoping that will at least get me an alternate spot but have my body crossed to hopefully be at least #59. :D

I asked the secretary when does acceptance or denial letters start going out and she said approximately 6-8 weeks after the deadline. All of us that are applying for the Spring has a month to go. And then the wait and mail obsessing begins. :chuckle Good luck to us all

Meth, hello, I have a question. I start the NH Lonestar nursing program on Aug. 25. You mentioned you have a PDA, will downloading the Nurse Diagnosis Book & the Manual of Lab Values help? I dont know if we need those actual books to read in class or are used as a reference only. recently I bought the Taber's & Drug Book for my PDA. thanks.

I think it can help depending on how thorough it is compared to the suggested/required books.

OMG TX! I just got back from vacation and read this post. What a score! I think you can un-cross your body now...you've got to get in. If you don't the rest of us are hopeless! Congratulations!:yeah::yeah::yeah:

Thanks so much smil , I worked hard for that score. I retook my Intro to Psyc and Comp I to make an A. I am still doubting myself, I need to stop that. It's just that I'm thinking I have waited to apply for so long (been doing pre-reqs since 2001 on and off), I finally do, and it all has me way tooooo nervous! I'm sure with your score, you totally have a shot also! Hoping for the best for all us. I would like to meet all of you that I'm taking this "waiting" game with.

I also asked the secretary would they e-mail acceptance or denial and she said it's by the mail. I read that somewhere but wanted everyone to know here also.

Are you taking any classes this fall?

T-minus three weeks to go for the deadline! Good luck to us all:up:
