Just getting started

U.S.A. Texas

I'm REALLY just getting started with Nursing so, help me out. I have a BS in Business Admin and a "background" in nursing - my mother and wife both graduated from the same school. I've heard nursing all my life. At any rate, I've had it with business and would like to try something else that offers some employment opportunity. So, the plan is to go back to school for to become an RN. Questions... in the Dallas area what schools would you suggest? Since I already have a BS I'm thinking about a community college, two year program.

Any thoughts on the subject?

Anyone? Suggestions on good community college programs north of the DFW area - I live near Lewisville.

Hello Ned, Welcome

I too am switching from the business world into the nursing world. I am just finishing up my co-req's this semester at Brookhaven.

Most of my credits transferred, but it is still very competitive to get in anywhere in North Texas. I still had to retake courses to up my GPA from my first tour in college.

Anyway, rumor is the Brookhaven program will probably be transitioned to NOrthlake in Irving. The NCLEX pass rates are the best in the immediate area there. If all goes well, I will be the last class at Brookhaven starting in January.

You may also consider TWU since you already have a degree, compare the programs and the time it will take to complete. With the wait to get into a program its important to consider which way you want to go. I chose CC for the price, Of course I don't qualify for any aid but loans.

Hope this helps!

Right now I'm leaning toward El Centro. Anyone have any words of wisdom about that place?

Its the same program. The only difference is you attend class and have access to the more Northern clinical sites by doing the sattelite. Your degree however will come from El Centro no matter what DCCCD campus you attend.

I put El Centro as a second option, but living in the Colony I sure would hate to have practicals in someplace like Duncanville.

Specializes in ER, ICU, L&D, OR.

Well living in the colony, you can always go over to collin county community college aka the Quad C. Do your practicals at a good hosp like medical center of plano.

I have heard it is a good program also. I was a little intimidated by the entrance exam, but I'm pretty sure I will be in over here, and both are out of county anyway.

NCTC has a program also, it might be based in Lewisville.

I go to NCTC. All of the nursing classes are in Gainesville.

YIKES!!!!! Maybe not GAinesville...LOL

I will tell you that I would not recommend El Centro nor Brookhaven. I did not attend there for my nursing education, but I did work with several people who atteneded El Centro, and did not have a good learning experience. I attened TVCC (trinity valley comm college) which is located in Kaufman, which is probably a good distance away and I had a very good learning experience, and recommened them to everyone, who can or is willing to drive there. Yes, there are advantages to El Centro, just with them being in Dallas, you have more access to larger facilities, which gives you a better clinical experience, but my friends tell me that they were so burned out of nursing by the end of the 2 years that they did not want to do nursing. Yes, they do have a high percent pass on boards, which is great but you have to make it through the program first. I could go on and on. If you have any questions for me, feel free to ask me, I will do my best. Hope what ever decision you make, you will be happy and will have a good experience in nursing.
