Job offer from Huston

U.S.A. Texas

Specializes in Nurse Practitioner.

I interview for a hospital in Huston last week and got an job offer earlier this week. It's in a large hospital in TMC, my offer is permanent full time day shift at 29$/hr (+geographic diff). I could have the night shifts with 4$ more/hr but I just despise nights. I have a BSN with 1.5 yr of ICU experience, I'm paid as an RNII for now.

I just wonder if this salary is fair/decent. I've never been to Houston, have no idea what to expect. I've been looking at apartments online but since i'm not sure how much i will bring home after deduction, I don't know what is the price range i can afford. PLus I hear the commute is horrible so any good and cheap area within/near TMC to recommend? Does anyone know how much i would make as an RN III within a few months?

Thanks everyone :)

I am assuming you mean "Houston", right?

That's a decent salary for TMC. All the hospitals are pretty much in the same ballpark in order to be competitive. If you become CCRN, you could probably up that amount a bit. No one can tell you anything about "RNIII" because those types of designations are not standardized. I'm sure that the hospital will inform you about the criteria for achieving that title & the salary range associated with it.

If you have never even been to Houston, I STRONGLY suggest that you at least make a visit to our area before deciding on a move. I love my H-town and don't want to live any where else, but I'm the first to admit that it certainly is not everyone's cup of tea. There are a lot of unique characteristics that factor in to the 'love it' or 'hate it' decision. As a native, I'm seriously peeved at all the carpet-baggers that eagerly relocate for great jobs and then spend all their time bashing everything that is responsible for that great opportunity. Don't be one of those, OK?

Houston is huge. If you live far away from where you work, you're going to face some traffic. But that's no different than any other major city. Working in the TMC has it's own peculiar challenges. You'll be paying to park in a remote lot and taking a shuttle bus to your hospital. This can add a considerable amount of time and aggravation, particularly if you are like me and just don't "do" people first thing in the morning until you've had a few cups of coffee. TMC has its own transit center. If you're interested in avoiding the drive, you may want to look into their bus routes.

There are no "cheap" living areas close to the TMC. There are tons of apartments in close proximity, especially if you're single and not concerned with the school district or distance to schools. Some of the complexes give special consideration to TMC employees. But there is also a huge variety of housing available that is within a very reasonable driving distance to the TMC. I would encourage you to check the 288 corridor (towards Pearland). It's a straight shot - lots of TMC folks live out that way. If you're more beach-oriented, you may want to look at something further down I-45 toward Galveston. It's a more difficult and longer commute but there are a lot of suburbs down that way, but some of them are pricey.

Hello HouTx, thanks for commenting. I would love to visit Houston (sorry for the typo) before my big move but I live all the way up north (where summer does not exist) plus I plan to travel to Asia between 2 jobs so it's unlikely I have the time or cash to visit. But I promise whatever happens I won't complaint ;)

As for housing, I do not want to drive to work at all, because just like you, I'm not a morning person and don't want to spend any extra time on traffic in the morning; also I won't be able to buy a car months later I settle down. initailly I was planning to rent a place in midtown, the place seems safe and very close to a metro; but the price for a 1b1b is way over my budget. I will take a look at TMC's transit hopefully i will find something that suits me :D

The pay is more than fair. I have twice as much experience as you in DFW and don't make that much. ;) Congrats on the job. Here's hoping you love Houston!
