Houston GN internship?

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I am a recent Grad with my BSN and just passed my Nclex..I am having a hard time finding a GN internship in the Houston area. I am trying to stay away from the med center because i just dont think its worth all the hassel. I am looking into the areas of NICU, nursery or as last resort L&D (thats about all the adult people i want to work with). Already applied to hermann, clear lake, st lukes, and houston northwest and wasnt chosen for these past intership positions. Can anyone tell me if they know if any other internships that I can apply for right now or when one might open in the future? Im not even sure who all even has internships. Im trying to stay positive but its discouraging when alot of my friends have jobs, Thanks.

also applied to Christus St. John, Ben Taub, UTMB..although a few i think had already filled the position by the time i applied and just hadnt taken it offline yet

sending you a PM

NeoNurse, if you have any information regarding internships in the Houston area please PM me. Thanks

how did you get info on these internships? I recently graduated and so far the only hospital i can find any internship information on is Memorial Hermann.

you have to keep checking websites and calling nurse recruiters to get the latest updates on when applications are available etc...

I can't find anything either, other than Hermann. I want to work in the NICU (only!), and I'm afraid with the job market being as it is, that I'm going to have to work in adult Med/Surg. One of the 2 main hospital systems here in Austin just notified us that they aren't hiring any new grads. Kind of makes it necessary to relocate.

I have also heard that Texas Children's doesn't hire new grads. I just have a list of websites that I check on a daily basis to see if any new GN internships have been posted. I just really want to have a job in hand when I graduate in December.

If anyone has any information, I would really appreciate it! Thank you and good luck to all.

alot of hospitals in houston dont even hire into the nicu for internships unfortunately..and if they do its very very very few people. I tried this last time around and didnt get anything so i have had to consider a few more areas just to try to get my foot in the door. texas childrens does hire new grads :)

Not true. Hermann in the med center hires >15 new grads twice a year. TCH does hire them, but not always. It's not a good place to learn though. St. Joseph downtown also has a NICU internship program.

I've really been contemplating lately about having a "back up" specialty or area that I should apply for, until I get the experience necessary to transfer to the NICU. Your situation is exactly what I have been worrying about this past week or so. Thank you so much for the insight. Good luck to you!

Thats what the nurse recruiter told me...it all depends on the need they have so maybe they had alot of need! I didnt apply at the tmc location so i cant account for that one last time but UTMB hired i think 4 and Clear Lake Regional 2 and Hermann SW 3 or 4

The best time for Spring grads to apply for internships was Jan. to April depending on the hospital. Hospitals typically only hire new grads for internships during set application periods generally about 4-6 months before you will graduate applications will open up. Applications for December grads are now opening and you can try to apply for those.

I know in Houston they do hire new grads into NICU, specifically at Hermann, TCH, and Woman's but, spots are limited and internships are competitive based on GPA, hesi, experience, and interview. Recruiters have mentioned there will be a few more GN positions in December than there were in May so your chances may be better.

Maybe consider something like PICU if your can't get into NICU directly and working there a while for the experience.
