El Paso Community College Nursing Student

U.S.A. Texas

Hi. Is anyone here attending nursing school at El Paso Community College? I will be starting my first semester in January and am very excited! I've already purchased many of the text books and wanted to know if anyone else has? Any concerns or comments about attending the program? I'd love to hear from you!

Happy New Year!:yeah:

Hi Laura,

What did the counselor @ EPCC tell you that she/he scared you?? I'm ranking in June to start the program this Fall. I've heard a couple of horror stories from some of the students but nothing too bad. For the most part I've heard the EPCC nursing program is good and a lot of hands on compared to UTEP. As far as Anamarc, I know it's extremely expensive to go there. In my opinion, I would stick it out at EPCC. Also, many hospitals prefer students who graduated from EPCC than from UTEP because they have a lot more hands on experience. How long before you can rank? Hope this helps.

Well I really don't know that much. I am just graduating from high school this month and I am looking around to see where I want to go. The counselor at EPCC just kept telling me that it was a very hard program to get into and that lots of students fail. She said some numbers like how many started and how many actually finished and it was a big drop in numbers. I don't want to start and then find after a couple years that I won't make it. My mom was talking to her friend at church today who is a nurse at Sierra about the nursing programs and she said that Anamarc was expense too but that those nurses are very good and it only takes like a year. My mom is going to go with me this week to both schools, she is worried about the money. I have good grades now so I think I can do well and maybe get a scholarship. Right now I just want to forget about school atleast for the summer and take a break. :D My mom wants me to be registered and ready for the fall. Thank you for the info and I will keep checking this website, my friend who is going to the LVN school told me about this website. If you have any informaton about scholarships that woudl be great.

I strongly recommend against the vocational schools in town that tell you that you can finish nursing school in one year. Yes, you will go for the LVN first (which is a one year diploma); however, the cost of attending these schools is outragous. It's the same cost as attending a 4 year university for all four years. If you qualify for financial aid, even pulling out the max on the student loan for that year, you will still need to make up the balance. Does that give an idea of the cost of these private vocational schools? You can get the same, if not better at EPCC or UTEP. You will get different stories on who learns better but it's where you are comfortable. I'm only pointing out the financial aspect because you will have to remember that when you finish school and if you max out your loans you will have a heavy price to pay, and you also have to consider that LVN's pay may not cover the cost of loan repayment. Then, if you want to continue to go for the RN, its more costs, more loans, and an even higher debt when you graduate.

Hi Iam currently attending EPCC and I finished all my requirements, got 297 on accuplacer and 700 on required courses. Total 997 out of 1200 needed. Reason is that I got a C on micro and two A's for anatomy 1 and 2. Im trying to rank on Oct. Do you think I can make it for raking or should I start crying cause its not gonna happen. I also apply for RN and LVN ranking. What are my chances, please please advise me!

Hey Im trying to rank and I have 997 out of 1200 required to rank. Got two A's for anat 1 and 2 and C for micro, but 297 for accu. Do you think I can make it on Oct ranking.

Patito,

It all depends on the pool that's ranking with you in Oct. When I ranked in June there was about 60 students out of the 90 that got accepted all had A's in their ranking courses (AP I and II, and Micro). The rest of the students had 2 A's and one B. My score was 1132 and I had all A's in the ranking classes. Also, when a friend of mine ranked last year she said a couple of students got in with B's and C's. So pretty much it comes down to the other people your competing against. If the majority have all A's and their Accuplacer scores are good it becomes more competitive. Remember, the ranking classes are worth 70% and Accuplacer scores are worth 30%. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Thanks

I got a scor of 1007 so far, but Im still waiting for their decision, but I might make it to the LVN aternate. Know I dont knot if to retry for the RN and take micro again to replace that C or just go for the LVN:uhoh3:

First I want to thank everyone for all their advice, it really does help! My name is Anna, I’m starting to freak out just a bit because I will be ranking in June for the Fall 2011 program for EPCC. I have a B in BIO I and an A in Bio II. I will be taking my Micro in January and I’m shooting for an A. My biggest worry is my accuplacer test because I have to retake it and I didn’t do so great the first time. A friend of mine also told me that as long as I get above 1000 pts that I would get in. I’m not sure how true that is, so I was wondering what you all

thought. I also wanted to know if you got in the program Patito? I have been rooting for you. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Hi Anna and ETovar and Laura and Patito:

I haven't been on here for quite some time but...

Anna:

I was recently accepted into the EPCC RN program for my scheduled Oct 2010 ranking to start Jan 2011. My recommendation to you is to shoot for all As in everything if you still have time to retake, and shoot for the highest accuplacers you can get. I ranked with 1145 pts and was top 10 ranking students but i too was told that usually 1000-1100 pts gets you in but it really does depend on how many students are qualified for ranking in June 2011 and what their points are. Also keep in mind if i am not mistaken Pharmacology will also be a ranking course for Oct 2011 rankings, not sure if June 2011 needs it you may want to double check...

Etovar:

Wow congrats on ranking! i don't believe i ever responded about pharmacology i probabaly didn't get the forum update email, its been a while and you're so right time flew and i ranked and am ready to start! :yeah: i did indeed finish pharm w/the eppc nurse pract shes great i got an A and recommend her to future students.

Laura Jasso:

Its funny you should say the counselor scared you because i was also scared by what i was told...exactly the same things you were told, thats its really really really difficult to get in, that its impossible to have a job (i worked at the time never thought it would be possible to give up working but i figured it out) not everyone makes it, only a select few graduate etc etc sounded very negative to me at the time but my theory now is if you're serious you'll still go for it and put in 110%. i won't lie i was discouraged for some time while i figured things out, but it didn't make me want to give up, i really wanted to do it no matter how an ugly picture people painted. i went to another counselor and wasn't told negative things anymore not even from the 1st counselor, i too have heard the exact same thing Etovar had to say about different schools but again its just what i've heard, however i did indeed pick EPCC because of more "hands on learning" and i wouldve needed more pre-reqs for UTEP. i'll still have to take extra courses in summers so that i may xfer to TX TECH for RN-BSN prog but i can start RN prog sooner.

Patito:

I hope that you ranked into LVN or RN prog! i hope that if things didn't work out as planned that you kept trying :)

BellaBella,

Congrats on getting accepted into the program! I survived 1st semester and will begin 2nd semester in the Spring. My advice: Read, read, read! Don't fall behind on your reading. You are going to have a lot of check-offs 1st semester but don't let that get in the way from your Foundations course. Remember, check-offs don't count as a grade. If you fail a check-off you can always do it over again. (FYI, I never failed any of my check-offs :lol2:) My point is that don't stress too much over check-offs, focus on Foundations. And, if an instructor is having a retain (review session), go! The retains helped me out a lot. Also, expect to be in school a lot. I was there Mon. - Sat. If I wasn't in the library studying I was in the lab practicing for my check-offs. The lab instructors are awesome, they are extremely helpful. If you have any questions for me just ask. Good luck to you 1st semester, I'm sure you'll do great.
