Current San Antonio Hospital CNA pay

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi everyone!

I am considering working as a CNA while in nursing school to help pay for my tuition. I am wondering if anyone can give me an idea of what a CNA makes in a hospital setting. I have about a year of experience on Med/Surg and I am a certified phlebotomist (with experience). I guess I am open to working in the lab too, if the pay is better.

Any advice/ideas would be appreciated! I am doing a Second Degree BSN program and have all my prereqs completed (except Texas' history requirement, which I'll have to do prior to the nursing courses). I plan on working my current full-time job and saving up for a year while doing the few non-nursing classes need for the Bachelor's then work as a CNA or phlebotomist during nursing school.

My federal loans are pretty much maxed out so I am trying to figure out how to pay for my nursing degree. I think this should do it but I am just trying to get an idea of how much I'll have to save and how much I'll have to work during nursing school.

Thanks for any advice/information you can give me! :)

I reside in the DFW area and I work as a patient care tech in the surgical inpatient unit. The starting pay for techs is between $14 & $16 an hour.

Its extremely tough to acquire a tech job in Dallas; there are so many LVN and BSN students here (hospital tech jobs are so scarce).

I think the job market maybe a little bit better in San Antonio, since there are not as many nursing programs.

SA is at the lower end of the pay scale in TX. DFW & Hou are higher overall - not just in healthcare. Differences are attributed to differences in the cist of living.
