Considering NP School

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hello all, I'm a new grad RN and a new transplant to Texas. I attended an EL-MSN program and now I really want to go to NP school. I'm wondering:

1. Is the job outlook for NP's in Texas as great as I hear? Or is it more like how the job outlook for RN's is "great" (as long as you have experience)?

2. What are the schools with the best reputation?

3. This is a long shot, I know...but does anyone have a degree like mine (also called "alternate entry" MSN) and is now an NP? Did you get another Master's or a certificate?

ANY help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Welcome to Allnurses.com!

You already have the MSN degree, so attending a nurse practitioner program would result in another MSN degree conferral, which is impractical. Most people in your situation have the post-masters certificate.

I know someone who earned the MSN degree with a specialization in nursing management, but returned to school to earn two post-masters certificates. One certificate was the PNP (pediatric nurse practitioner) and the other was the FNP (family nurse practitioner).

UTHSC, great school. Affiliated with University Hospital, so you can get your foot in the door for job opportunities after you graduate!
