Hello everyone. I am starting my last semester in an LPN-RN program near Memphis, Tn. My husband has found about a position with the Irving Police Department that he is REALLY considering. I will not move anywhere until I graduate but I just wanted to ask about the safest places to live in the area. I have never been to Irving but I would like any info that readers may have about schools (I have a 5 year old daughter), residential areas, possible places to work and such. Any info is appreciated.:)

IMHO the nicest areas of Irving are Las Colinas and Valley Ranch. (Although both can be costly depending on what you're looking for)

As far as schools go there are 3 school districts that cater to the city of Irving:

Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD

Coppell ISD

Irving ISD

IMO Coppell ISD is the best of the three school districts.

Irving has 2 major hospitals:

Baylor at Irving

Las Colinas Medical Center

Although I have been an LPN for 5 years, I will be a new RN grad. Are the hospitals "orientation friendly" or will I be on my own?

I agree with the above poster. I will stick with Las Colinas and Valley Ranch. I enjoyed living in Las Colinas, but it is a bit pricey.

You are close to pretty much everything in Irving. You could work downtown (easy access to 35) or even something close to home like Baylor Irving (smaller hospital).

Part of Irving is Carrollton/Farmers Branch ISD...I wouldn't recommend that. Not the highest on the safey list.

If you're willing to commute up to 10 miles, there are more affordable nearby suburbs that share a border with Irving such as Euless, Bedford, and Grapevine. Euless and Bedford are part of the HEB Independent school district, which recently attained "Recognized" status for having high test scores. Grapevine is in the Grapevine-Colleyville school district, which supposedly has good schools, too.

I'm just mentioning these other places because Las Colinas is a very high-priced, upper crust type of place. Some people are willing to pay to be among this crowd, and others simply want more bang for their bucks.

If your husband hires on with Irving PD, have him ask around as well. Police officers have valuable information!

I moved down here to Lewisville 10 years ago and had a list of apartments to visit. I happened to "know" a Lewisville police officer from an internet chat room. He (& his wife) narrowed my list down to 3 places that they "would let a friend live".
