Collin College Fall 2013 Nursing Applicant's

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I just finished taking my PSB and I've already submitted my application to Collin College for the Fall of 2013. This is my 3rd time applying and I'm really hoping I get in this time around. If I did well on the PSB I should have 15 out of 16 points, so I think I should have a pretty good chance of getting into the program. My question is has anyone heard anything about students being turned down for taking A&P I twice to improve their grade? I received a B the first time I took it, so I retook it this last semester and at the end of the semester my professor told my class if this was our 2nd time taking it then we might as well not even waste our time applying to Collin, because they will automatically throw away your application if you didn't get an A the first time you took it. Has anyone heard if this is true or not?

I definitely want to talk to you, but don't know how to PM on this site. My name is Brandi Rater Davis if you want to Facebook me. Otherwise, would you tell me to PM you on here?? Also, anyone that wants to talk nursing, feel free to add me on FB!

Purplebubble10...you said we will have lecture on Mondays until 2:30 or so. I would like to know more about that? What is the latest it will run? The reason I am asking is because I will have a 2nd grader that gets out of school at 3pm. Thanks :)

Strongly recommend those with daycare age kids get full time childcare. Your class hours have very little to do with how much time the program really takes. You will have group projects, mandatory volunteer time, papers, presentations, skills to practice. The day before clinicals you have to go to your clinicals site to research your patient for the following day and then complete the required paperwork before clinicals the next day, then after clinicals you will have paperwork due as well. Also have plan A, B and C for when/if kiddos get sick. You can never take kids with you to your clinicals site, both for picking up and researching your patients and of course not on clinical days. You also cannot bring kiddos to class or lab. There pretty much are no excused absences and having to miss can swiftly lead to having to retake the semester. You aren't in Kansas anymore! Nursing school is pretty intense. Get family and friends on board to help you.

I will second all of this! I have full time care for my child and there is no way I could do all of this without it or the help of my husband in the evenings and weekends. In addition to that, it really isn't a good idea to try to work full time either. We have very few people in our class that are doing that and they aren't doing very well.

Thank you so much for the info!!!! What about elementary kids? Do they need before/after school child care? And if so, how many days? Thanks again! :)

On your clinical day, you will need before school care as you have to be there at 6:30am and likely after school care as well as you don't get out until after 2:30 (sometimes even later) and then the days get longer as the semesters go on. I think the rest of the days you should be able to do without before and after school care depending on what time they get out of school. It can be 3pm before you get out on Mondays sometimes. But my daughter is only 3 so I don't have to worry about that just yet. Maybe not.done.yet would have more advice on this front.

You need to have back up plans for the kids for after school for sure. It will be after school hours when you go to your clinical site at a minimum. Many days you will be able to pick your kid up but there WILL be days you definitely can't and it won't always be predictable.Have a plan in place. Nursing school with kids is very hard, but doable if you set yourself up to succeed. Arranging for child care is a huge part of that, whether wee ones or school age. Find out who is committed to helping you.

I called a month or so ago to try to figure out the schedule because I needed to figure out child care as well. I was told that Monday would be lecture from 8:30 to 2:30. Tuesday would be skills lab from 9:00 to 1:00. Clinical would be either Wednesday or Thursday from 6:30 until 3:30. I wish we didn't have to wait to find out what day we have clinical!

Has anyone heard about Collin switching to an online book based program? I've been told by a current student that starting this Fall, it will no longer be lecture with handwritten tests, but is converting to online book based program. I'm trying to determine if this is true. If so, can you shed some light as to what this means? Thanks! :)

Rachael, are you looking for child care for school aged or preschool aged?

I have a preschooler. I'm sending her to MDO 3 days a week and then my MIL will help as well.

Do you know whe we find out our clinical day?
