Collin College ADN Spring 2015

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hello everyone! I didn't see a thread for Collin College Spring 2015 (July 31 deadline), so I thought I'd start one, especially since there seems to be a whole new point system that they will be implementing for the first time. I plan on trying to apply (also applying here in Sugar Land to WCJC and in Alvin at ACC).

I have a previous degree from Arizona for Computer Science (really doesn't do me much good! lol) but after 9yrs working in IT, I finally admitted that it wasn't fulfilling -took the leap of faith and decided to go back to school to become a nurse. My dream is to one day soon work in home hospice care.

I went to the Collin College nursing info session about a month ago (March 2014) and am taking the PSB exam on Mon May 5. I am not entirely sure how the new point system compares to the old one, but it seems like there are a lot more points involved and I wonder what this means in terms of a the new "minimum" number of points. I know before 16pts was great, 15pts was good and 14pts was iffy to get in. With the new point system, I am aiming for 29 of the 34 max points -we'll see! Does anyone know how that might stack up?

Anyone else trying to apply for Spring 2015?

I was fingerprinted last Friday, got my blue card from the Texas BON today (exactly 1 week later) saying my TX DPS and FBI background check had been received and my file is clear. I also paid the extra $24.95 to have the results sent to me. The BON blue card is approximately the size of a voter registration card and the duplicate record came in a white 8 1/2 x 11" envelope with "Crime Records Service, Texas Department of Public Safety" as the return address.

Although I knew I had a clean record, I was really sweating this b/c of so many things I've read on these message boards. Receiving that blue card was just (if not more) exciting than getting my actual acceptance letter, lol!

I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone at orientation!!

Best of luck to you all, and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

Alicia :-)

Thanks Alicia for sharing this information. I also have received my blue card. Wanted to know, do we have to send this card to the nursing school. Please let me know if you have any idea.

Thanks and see u at orientation

Wow that was fast! 1 week! Thanks for all the info, I'll know what to look for in the mail. :)

Yay got my little blue card in the mail today! All clear :) Took almost two weeks to get mine back. See y'all soon!

I had a question for you guys about transcripts. I previously graduated from a college so I was going to submit my transcript to show that I had a bachelors degree in business but I know I took a class in 2009 for biology and ended up with a D. So I was wondering if they would apply that grade to the overall GPA even though I retook it at Collin and got an A. Right now at Collin I have a 4.0 so I'm not submitting my transcript for any previous credits just to show that I have a degree. I know there is a five year limit on classes and I'm thinking that by the time I apply (Jan 15 for Spring start date) that it will be past the five year limit, but I'm not too sure. Any thoughts?

I also took a psychology course at my previous school and made an A. Would that grade be applied as well?

Hey guys! I'm currently in the program finishing my 3rd semester. I saw where a couple people were asking about whether or not they needed to turn in their blue cards, the answer is yes. Make sure you turn it in before school starts in January. I was told by some of the first semester students that some of their classmates were kicked out first week for not having it. It would be wise to go ahead and make copies of all the documents you turn in, I had to resubmit my CPR certification and shot records multiple times, so its always a good idea to have copies of everything.

As for the question from ausdev, you are required to turn in all transcipts from all the schools you've attended, but the nursing program will only calculate your GPA for the relevant classes.

If anyone has any more questions let me know, I'll try my best to answer them. Good luck, and congrats to those who got accepted!

Thank you NurseRebe for the info! Does anyone know what the skills pack is that we have to order? I couldn't see any info about what it actually included. Also, I saw the email today about the uniforms....yay for NAVY pants!!!!!!! :) Do we need to order any of the supplies available from Meridy's too or just the uniforms?

They typically give you the skills pack first week of school, but you'll pay for it at orientation. Make sure you save everything in the bag, you'll reuse it every semester. Your uniform is the only requirement from Meridy's, anything else is optional.

Thank you so much NurseRebe2015! Do you mind listing off what comes in the skills pack? I emailed similar questions to the nursing office today KristineMB. I asked what came in the skills pack and was told, "The Skills Pack contains everything you need for the for semesters. I don't have a list for the skills pack and that must come from Coursey." So do we even need to buy stethoscopes, BP cuffs, clipboards, etc.? I would hate to start off the semester unprepared. Showing up late to orientation was embarrassing enough

You're welcome! The skills pack is filled with a lot of stuff, some of which are: syringes, foley cather, IV start kit, IV tubing, trach care kit, bandaids, scissors, and so on. My class has made some recommendations on what they should add and leave out, but I'm not sure yet if they plan to make the changes. Take really good care of your needles, I broke most of mine (we reused them so much for skills), you can't get more, so if you break them or lose them you'll be stuck trying to borrow needles from your classmates. You will need to buy your own stethoscope. Blood pressure cuff isn't necessary, they will have them at school and in the hospitals. As for a clipboard, you really don't need one until about 8 weeks into school when you start clinicals. I bought mine at office depot, the nice thing about it is that it opens up so I'm able to keep my clinical papers inside of it and it has a calculator attached to it, I think it was around $20. If you think of anymore questions just let me know. Good luck!

Hello everyone,

I am planning to enroll for the nursing program in collin college.

I had been there but couldn't get more information.

I would like to know that how many hours for each credit hour I will have to put each semester. Moreover, how many days and hours of clinicals for each semester they have.

Somebody told me that its 8 to 5 college for all four semesters. When I inquired in Brookheaven and El Centro college, they have very less hours compare to collin college. Is it true that collin college have lots of hours academically and clinically than other colleges? Please help.

I'm sure most are having this same issue because it appears only a few are registered for classes, but...as I attempt to register with the "registration codes" emailed, I am given an error code "Registration error/"field of study restriction-major". I have emailed the dept but have not received a response yet. Just wondering if anyone has received any feedback on the issue?
