For example, if you are an OR nurse and work three 12's a week and want another shift a week, can you work prn in another department? Or can you ever get extra shifts in OR? or if you work full time in OR (for example) in a big hospital 45 min away and have a small hosp 5 min away from home, can you get prn job at closer hospital to get an extra shift each week?

My experience is that if you work 36 hrs in the hospital and they need help with another shift-you could still pick up 4 hrs. before the hospital has to pay you for overtime. In some cases they maybe desperate, and not care if they pay you overtime. I use to work is a registry (PRN) position. Then I took a .5fte,but still worked PRN in the hospital for another dept.. However, when I finally went to 1.0 FTE, I was told that I could not still work PRN in the same hospital because all my PRN hours would be at time and a half. Of course if I wanted to work at a different hospital PRN then I could. Now I was able to get around the PRN and full-time FTE by being available for call. If your hospital does not consider 36 hrs full-time, then I would think you could pick up PRN. Well, I hope this helped and didn't confuse you. Bottom line I guess is to as you HR person.:wink2:

It really depends on your skills and experience and ultimately if your hospital will allow OT. I worked at one hospital that was so short staffed that we got a bonus just to walk in the door. I worked full time on my regular unit, and part time on another. I was tired but the money was good.

It really comes down to their needs and their budget. You might want to check out signing with a company and during per diem under them. That way you don't get hit with the taxes that you would with OT.

It's all about staffing and budget. We have a handful of OR rn's that work extra shifts in the OR, ER or PACU. ER shifts are pretty easy to pick up, extra shift bonus plus time and a half if over 40. Good luck
