I have read every "shoe" thread there is and decided to get the C&C clogs in Zebra print. I lost the receipt (stupid, I know) and I just can't wear them. The top of my foot is so high that they leave a bruise. I have a hard time with shoes because of this problem. Dansko's do the same thing so I can't wear them either. What are some fabulously supportive shoes with a really soft top to accomodate my high foot top? Please offer any shoe suggestions for my unique problem!! I'm stumped.

For example, if you are an OR nurse and work three 12's a week and want another shift a week, can you work prn in another department? Or can you ever get extra shifts in OR? or if you work full time in OR (for example) in a big hospital 45 min away and have a small hosp 5 min away from home, can you get prn job at closer hospital to get an extra shift each week?

Around where I live, the hospitals have just started to list their graduate nurse positions on their websites. Some say "graduate nurse" and others say "intern". I did find out that several hospitals don't list theirs until Feb. Call the recruiter at each hospital and ask questions - when will jobs be posted, is there a graduate nurse job fair, what is the committment time for internships. Regular jobs without internships I've seen listed as RN-I. Don't know how hard they are to get, what kind of orientation you get, etc but do know you have to pass boards first for these. One hospital system that has 3 hospitals in different cities already has their intern positions listed -- I applied online and then 2 days later checked the status and it had a "no thanks, have selected other applicants...." Totally bummed. I am applying to multiple positions this weekend online with another hospital - they have a grad nurse job fair at end of Feb but since jobs are posted already, I'm submitting resumes. I keep reading all these posts about it being 6 months after graduation and people still haven't found a job. I am so worried because we have about 8 schools in my area - that is a lot of nursing grads all scrambling for a job at the same time. I was trying to decide what department I wanted to work in but now, I am past that. I will apply for all positions except for the ones I absolutely hate. I NEED a job and can always move into another department that I want more after I have working experience to put on my resume. Your best bet is just to spend the day on the phone talking to recruiters. I am soooo worried about not getting a job right away!

We have to do a big report on two movies. One of them is "On Golden Pond". I am a little confused. We have to list all DSM-IV-TR diagnosis for the main character (Norman). We have to then give examples of how the patient meets the criteria from the movie. I came up with dementia. I can't really say Alzheimer's definitively can I, since I don't have any history, tests, etc? I have examples of each dementia criteria so that is not really my problem. My problem is with additional diagnosis classifications. Our text says that most people with dementia meet the criteria for depression also. On major depressive disorder, I can assume that he meets the criteria of a change in previous function and that they impair functioning (espcially socially) but the 3rd criteria is that he meet at least 5 of a list and I don't see him exhibiting 5. Is dementia the only DSM diagnosis you would come up with for Norman? Very hard to do a psych eval when you can't ask your patient any questions or look at their history!

I will be graduating in May. I have looked online at hospitals I am interested in and they already have their job postings up for graduate nurse intern positions that say you can apply as long as you graduate w/in 6 months of application. Should I go ahead and submit application/resume? There is a graduate nurse fair at the end of Feb. Should I just wait for that instead? I am very worried about the huge number of graduates in our area all searching for intern jobs at the same time. Guess I just wondered if I applying now has any action or what betters my chances. I am looking at Charlton Methodist and Baylor. Really want L&D, pedi, or NICU. Thanks for the job hunting advice.

After doing clinicals in the nursing home, med-surg floor, Labor & delivery, OR, PACU, and Day surgery I am confused! Why is the pay rate higher at nursing homes than hospitals? Hospital seems so hectic and fast paced because most people there are acutely ill or injured. I understand that overall nursing home patients actually have MORE issues due to multiple medical problems related to age, etc. but it is different. Don't know exactly how to verbalize what I mean without making either setting seem less desirable than the other. We have students who can't wait for Emergency room because they like the faster pace and love acute trauma. Then there are students who just don't love the "action". Thank goodness for the differences because there are so many different needs for nurses in totally different situations. I think any nurse can find the right "fit". I dreaded my nursing home rotations until I did them. Then to my suprise, I liked it a lot. I liked the stability of having patients for a longer time period. I liked being able to get to have first hand knowledge of what was "normal" for each particular patient so it was so easy to spot a change. In the acute setting you don't have that prior knowledge. Sorry - rambling on and on!

I will be graduating next year and was wondering what is the new grad pay difference between working for different types of places. There has been many discussions about what different hospitals pay and bonuses etc. I want to know how the pay compares for working at nursing home vs. doctors office vs hospital?

Patient was 29 yr old with End Stage Renal Disease. She did her own peritoneal dialysis at home for past 2 years and did it for herself in hospital. She was in hospital for a total parathyroidectomy due to hyperparathyroidism. Her calcium levels remained low (considered critical levels by lab standards). No symptoms of the hypocalcemia were present. I have several diagnosis but can't seem to put them in order of priority. 1. impaired tissue integrity - due to the large, slight swollen incision on neck from surgery 2. risk for ineffective airway clearance r/t edema (of surgical site) 3. risk for injury r/t effects of hypocalcemia 4. risk of fluid volume excess r/t renal impairment OR retention of dialysalate OR compromised regulatory mechanism 5. risk for infection r/t surgical procedure 6. risk for infection: peritoneal r/t presence of catheter I understand that airway is always first but this is just a "risk" as opposed to other things that are actually happening. The low calcium seems like a really big deal to me but when I look in my care plan books at Nanda wording and interventions - there just doesn't seem to be many true interventions other than administering the prescribed meds, teaching, and monitoring for complications. So, would you use the hypocalcemia (how would you word your diagnosis), or the surgical site tissue integrity, or the airway risk (since airway is always a priority - pt had slight swelling, a small amount of swallowing difficulty but lung sounds were normal, even, clear, etc. .... Please help me --- Due 8:00 in the morning!!!

Thanks for the tips. There is NOWHERE close to wear I live that has dansko's to try on. I ordered from onlineshoes.com because they have free exchanges. I am going to call them today and they are supposed to email me the UPS label to print. I'll send my 39's back and try a 40. Also, I am used to very flat shoes. These make me feel so tall and I sort of wobble or twist my ankle some in them due to the heel height. Is this something I will get used to after I learn to walk in them?

I just rec'd my white Dansko professionals in the mail today. I wear a size 9 so I ordered a size 39 Dansko. I know they are supposed to fit "weird" and require getting used to. They seem to bother the top part of my foot some but I'm not sure if this is just because they are brand new. Do I need to walk and wear them around the house for several hours each day to "break" them in or will they always be this hard? I've never spent more than $40 on a pair of shoes so the $100 price is killing me!!!

I rec'd my rejection letter in April and was so disappointed!! I got a call on Monday offering me a spot in the LVN program at Navarro college - which I didn't even apply for - only applied to ADN. I accepted since did not get into RN program. Then two days later, I get a call offering me a spot in the RN program. YEAH!!! Evidently, someone dropped out and I was the first alternate. My rejection letter did not even mention that I was on the alternate list. I'm soooooo excited. The Lord always blesses me with opportunities!! We have our first meeting on Aug 6th to meet faculty, read Board of Nurse Examiner rules, etc. Just wanted everyone to know that even if you get rejected there is always the chance that you will get in at the last minute!!

I have 3 colleges close enough to attend: El Centro, Trinity Valley Community College, and Navarro College. El Centro is high on my list because I can apply for the spring semester. The other two don't have spring semesters so I will have to wait for next fall - but they are closer and don't have to contend with the "Downtown Dallas" stuff such as parking, traffic, beggars at the bus stop, etc. Anyway, I was wondering about the clinicals for the El Centro program. How are times/locations chosen for students? Do students get to chose or are you assigned? Does anyone know the days and hours that clinicals are or have been in the past throughout the program? I am just trying to figure out what best meets my schedule/lifestyle/family needs. Thanks.
