Baylor Hospital

U.S.A. Texas

I will graduate in 2015 and I want to work as a er nurse. I wanted to know for any nurses currently working at Baylor or who are familiar with the hospital how hard is it to get a job in their emergency department without any prior experience as an emergency room nurse? I am currently an ER Tech and have been for the last 3 years. A nurse I work with used to work there and was hired right out of nursing school with no experience there. She went to a job fair they were having and was hired on the spot, took her boards and moved to Texas. She told me to apply prior to me graduating because even though they say you need to have at least 1 year experience that does not mean they won't hire you.

I want to move to Texas. Just not sure how hard it would be getting a job considering I would be competing with other graduates from that area.

Please any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Most of the hospitals in the Baylor Health System are located in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The job market for new grads has become tight in this area over the last three to four years, so having a BSN degree will greatly enhance your chances of getting accepted into a new grad program.

Most new grad programs have start dates in January and July, and applications for these are typically accepted two to three months prior.

Other things will help, such as evidence of graduation from a local nursing program on your resume, plus good old-fashioned networking. It is less about what you know and more about who you know. Connections matter.

Also, be open to starting in another area of nursing to get your first year or two of experience because everybody and their mamas seem to want to work in the ER. It is am impacted specialty that receives lots of applicants.

You might need to get hired at any hospital to get your foot in the door, accrue some acute care experience in a less desired specialty such as med/surg or ortho, and attempt to transfer internally to the ER/ED.

Thank you for this insight. I will have my BSN when I graduate. I currently live in Illinois and was told by my current manager they would hire me in the ER when I graduate. I could stay and work here for 2 years and get experience and then look to move on. Just ready for a change and warmer climate.

Not sure if you know.... what does a new graduate approx. make in Texas? I know the cost of living is cheaper than in Illnois. The average a starting grad can make at some of our hospitals are from $25.50-33 just depends on the location.

Most hospital systems in the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area are paying new grad RNs between $22.50 and $26 hourly.

Definitely stay where you are if you have a job lined up. The move will be far smoother as an experienced nurse.

Generally speaking, Baylor pays their nurses less than other health systems in the DFW area.
