TSU or BELMONT STUDENTS

Hello all-

Is there anyone out there that went/goes to either Belmont or TSU ? If so, how is the nursing dept., how are the teachers, etc...??? I would like to go to Belmont, but I heard the students don't come out with all the knowledge they need, to be an R.N... TSU nursing 2010 students recently passed the NCLEX with a 100% pass rate, so that means the faculty must be getting their act together. The only thing I'm concerned about is TSU's notorious reputation for losing student's papers and financial aid information... If anybody has any info or experiences please share them. Thanks!

Hello. Yes, I am very familiar with the the good high rate of Tennessee State University nursing students passing the NCLEX because long ago I was a nursing instructor at TSU for several years! One of the reasons our students were prepared to do well on the test was because part of our requirements for students to take "in house" comprehensive written exams at different phases of their progress in the the program as part of their grades. Some of the students complained about these tests saying that if they passed the other nursing course and clinical work why should a comp exam be added to the requirements to progress in the program (the class requirements vary at each university). Yet I sincerely believe that these periodic comp exams were high quality tools to "catch" some students who had not fully mastered the key knowlege for the upcoming licensure exams and kindly require them to repeat nursing courses as needed. Hello, I'm not sure where you heard that about Belmont! I just graduated, and we also took aptitude tests at the end of each semester as well. Our final semester, we took the comprehensive Hesi, which is considered to be a good indicator of how you will do on the NCLEX. An 850 is considered acceptable as a score, while 900 is recommended. I got a 1030 without any preparation for it. In effect, I believe I did well because of how Belmont prepared me. I took the NCLEX this past Friday so I don't know the results yet There are ups and downs to every program, but I chose Belmont because I heard from several healthcare professionals in Nashville that Belmont students are the most highly regarded. In my clinical experience and job search experience, I have been told that as well by nurses on different units and nurse managers interviewing me. There have also been several semesters in which Belmont's graduating class had a 100% pass rate. You just have to look at a school's trends over time. 97% is still really high. I can definitely say that Belmont was well worth the investment. Also, if you look at the different cohorts for the Vanderbilt Nurse Residency program, you will see that out of the middle Tennessee nursing schools, more students from Belmont are chosen than out of any other school consistently each year.

Yea- I heard the same thing you did, about Belmont students getting hired over other nurses... After doing lots of research and personally talking with several hospitals, including Vanderbilt, I found this to be false. hires more mtsu students, from what I was told by their H.R dept. Anyway- I find it very funny, because Lipscomb and Cumberland students told me the say thing, that hospitals would only hire you if you went to their schools. It's so funny hearing some of these stories.

I have been told from day one, that since I'm a guy, as long as I pass the NCLEX it wouldn't matter what school I went too! I hope that turns out to be true...

You do not find out your nclex results until 48 hours have passed. I just logged on and found out that I passed. Anyways, there are a lot of great nursing schools out there, but personally, I find that Belmont has more than prepared me for a career as a nurse.
