I am currently a 20 y.o. RN working in an SICU in SC. It has been my dream to become a CRNA since I was 15. I am currently working on my prereqs for my BSN and will be applying to USC Upstate's online RN to BSN program for fall of next year. I am also working on getting as many letters around my name as possible (CCRN, CMC, TNCC, etc...). I am trying to show initiative by also advancing my way through my hospital's clinical ladder program and currently hold an officer position in the local AACN chapter. But with all the news about the DNP stuff starting in 2015 it has me discouraged. That's around 23 more credit hours added on to the already 28 month program. Is all this stuff I'm doing going to pay off? Will it be worth it in the end? I would greatly appreciate anyones incite and advice. Thanks.

You have 6 years before then in which you can make it through a program. Also, I don't think the DNP is going to occur in all NA programs until 2025.

Why does 23 more credit hours discourage you? A good portion of the current master's programs in nurse anesthesia are already 30-36 months and people survive them just fine. Once the DNP is fully implemented (all students admitted to a nurse anesthesia program in 2022 or later must be enrolled in a clinical doctorate program-DNP, DNAP, or equivelant) you are correct that there won't be 28 month programs, but that should not discourage you. If you want to be a CRNA it will be worth it.

My advice is to keep doing what you are doing. Sounds like you have a lot of iniative and are on the right track.

DNP/DNAP isn't 2015! Although there are programs that are already DNP or DNAP only and others in the talks of going to the Doctoral program only.

According to the American College of Nurses its supposed to be 2015 but I could have misinterpreted the info. I guess ill just keep trucking on and hope for the best. Thanks for the reply! Please excuse my abysmal spelling haha it was written after a long shift.
