can i mix CRNA and OB/L&D?

Okay, I am a nursing student in an accelerated program. I will finish next summer and have been thinking about various career paths. I am very interested in women's health, labor and delivery, and the whole birthing process. However, I am also interested in intensive/critical care, aspects of anesthesia, and the very alluring career of CRNA. Is there any way to marry the two? If so, what would I do and how?

I am looking to find out now, so I can know what direction I need to be headed in upon completion of my RN/BSN program, cause I know I need 2 years of work experience before I can apply........plus I don't have any kids yet so I'd like to do it all, but I ain't gettin' any younger, lol.

There are plenty of jobs out there for CRNAs who want to soley specialize into obstetrics.

First since most programs are annual application, then if you want to work for two years you will need to apply after 1 year experience. OB experience to get into CRNA school won't cut it but since you are interested in ICU I would just accept the most critical ICU experience available to you upon graduation.

Once you are a CRNA it will be easier to mix your love of womens health with CRNA. There are so many hospitals that hire CRNA's for epidurals during the L&D experience if thats what you are looking for...you will be the savior of pain relief in this field as well and the women will be very happy to see you.

That would be awesome! Sounds a lot like what I'm looking for! So as a CRNA, you DO have the opportunity to simply work on L/D type units?? What type of schedule do they typically work? With an epidural, do they have to stay and monitor the entire 'process' as with general anesthesia?

another consideration is your state/aea- I live in NC (Charlotte) and OB is covered strictly by MDs- but up in Asheville CRNAs cover OB --hth!
