Away from family during school

  1. Hello all!!

Have any students moved away from their families during CRNA school?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm going to apply to 3 CRNA schools next year. 2 of which are not close to home. 3-8 hours away. Hubby (no kids) would not want to move and I want to come back (after school) to where we are now. Is this realistic? How many people do this? School #1 would be for the entire program. School #2 would be for the first semester only, then at a satellite campus near home.
    Any thought are great apreciated!!

School #2 sounds like where I am at. I also have no kids and was lucky the hubby wanted to move with me. I do know some others who are in your situation. It is hard on them and their families. With that said #2 sounds like your best option. No one ever said this doesn't come at a huge sacrifice. You will have probably a weekend or 2 to go home and visit (books in tow ofcourse) and then Thanksgiving. After that it's finals and they you are home. Some people just rented apartments here and are moving back at Christmas, etc. It's possible! Good luck

I am eight hours from home, but only for the fall semester. I have no kids and hubby wasn't able to relocate due to work. I'm living in the dorm, so I won't have a lease to break. We have no children, so that's not a factor. It is a very stressful time. The hardest part for me is being away from home. I would encourage you to strongly look into the program where you are only away for one semester and find out the criteria for returning to your clinical site the second semester. I'm returning home after the fall break and taking classes from the hospital where I will have clinicals, but I would be unable to do that if there was only one student.
    Good luck.

I have 2 kids and still debating if I should apply to other states or not...Meanwhile, I am waiting for response from Oakland because it it my first choice this year (even though I have to drive 1.5 every other day...)

    Thanks for the replies!
jenniek - This may seem like a stupid question, but I know its difficult being away from hubby, but is it easier to study? My hubby is very supportive but when I'm studying (RN-BSN), I get a lot of unintentional interruptions. That is the only thing keeping me even thinking about going away for school. I'll get a little more time to study. Does that seem stupid? But then again, I know how important support systems are and it will be hard being away from him. More to think about. I guess I still have a little time.

It's a huge sacrifice and as long as everyone involved agrees to the terms and conditions everything should be fine. I just want to wish you the best of luck.

Not a stupid question at all. When I've been home for breaks, it is hard to study at home. I plan to use the local university library or hospital library to get out of the house and study once I return home and start the spring semester. I find too many other things to do while at home.

I am considering going to school away from home too, My first choice is in the town where we live but the others are away from here. I have 3 kids and a supportive husband. When debating about what I will do if not accepted into the program locally, he actually brought up my still going somewhere else if I can get in here. He thinks it would be better for all for them to stay in the stable home environment. He brought up that it may actually be easier for my studying and so forth, and easier for them in some ways too.

It is so much to think about. I can't wait to hear back about my interview so I know whether or not I have to make these alternate decisions. I am still in my BSN completion too finish this MAY 2006.

I am staring in the fall and the campus is 2 hours away from my home. We do not want to relocate d/t neighborhood and the hospital I most likely will work at is 8 miles from home. Being away from home with kids will be very hard, but there will be enough studying to take your mind off of it. Your kids will not forget who you are...Do as muc with them as you can before hand. :chuckle

I am 6 or so hours away from home for the first year of my program. I will be a little of 2 hours away during the clinical phase. I have 3 teenage children and it has been rough being the occasional, holiday dad. My children are old enough that they totally understand what is up but I sure miss them and them me. It is also very tough on my wife working full time and trying to make all the sporting events and school functions. However it will all be worth it in the end. My oldest will be off to college before I am home but I will be able to support him a lot easier when I am done. I do hope to take a long vacation with my family when I graduate just to get reacquainted.

Out of curiosity- which school can you be away for just one semester? This might work out for me. I live in a fairly large city but don't want to move- but we plan to because we have to (no CRNA school here). I have one child and a supportive husbad and I want to be done before my son starts school. Could you let me know so I could look into the school??? Thanks!
