I am currently enrolled in grad school and taking core classes. However, I'm undecided on what NP degree I want to focus on. I did narrowed it down to Family NP or Adult Gerontology: Primary Care NP. I'm not sure what path would be best. Of all the different NP degrees, which ones are in high demand so when I graduate I will be able to find job position What are your suggestions?????

Specializes in Hospital medicine; NP precepting; staff education.

Psych is in the highest demand in my area. I get emails all the time asking for NPs in that realm. The market is in such need they'll take FNPs for it, but I discourage that approach. As an FNP I don't feel adequately prepared for psych.

It depends on what your goals are. Do you want to see all ages and populations? What setting do you want? If yes and family practice, FNP is logical.

Do you prefer not to do women's health or pediatrics? Then Adult Gerontology would suit. You could still do family practice.

Or do you want the hospital or a critical care role? Depending on the population you want to see there is the ACNP or dual FNP/ACNP (which I wish I had the dual).

Good luck in your journey.

I would also like to encourage you to join your local APRN chapter and attend their meetings. It is an excellent way to network, especially in the event you need to obtain your own preceptors.

psych

but your also dealing with a difficult population and prescribing very reactive medicines so it is not to be taken lightly.

Yes there is high demand for psych NPs....but like any specialty...it is best if you come from that specialty as a RN.

For myself, I would never apply for a cardiology, nephrology NP position because that isnt my comfort zone.

When u r the NP in a specialty area....u need to know what u r doing!!
