Umsl or slu ??

I got accepted into umsl and slu for fnp program starting fall '13. I am so confused as to which one to go with. I like umsl cost is much lower and kind of like face to face interaction but having to drive once a week for next 3 years with family schedule is so something I have to figure out. Slu the cost is big factor, but I have been told is more reputable than umsl, though both are very good. I am nervous on an entire online np program. Anyone out there who have or are currently going to either of these colleges give me their input, please!!! Any info appreciated!!! Thank you!!!

As this is an international site, it might help you get better responses if you specify the names of the schools. The SLU down the street from me may not be the SLU you're thinking of. ;)

Congratulations! If I were in your shoes, I'd go to UMSL, solely because of the cost factor. Unfortunately, I got rejected from them twice. From my understanding, there are a ton of applicants for only a few slots. The one-day-a-week classes would definitely be difficult, but I would try to adjust my hours at work (three 12s, four 10s) to accommodate it. I was also accepted to SLU and Maryville. SLU looks like they have a fantastic program, and I really wanted to go there, but the cost stresses me out way too much. Not worth it, in my opinion. In fact, they raised their tuition from when I looked at it back in January. $935ish/credit hour is now $1010/credit hour. Outrageous. I just can't be okay with that. So, especially if you think you'd do better in an in-class environment vs. entirely online, I'm voting UMSL. I haven't been to either of these schools, but that is my 2 cents regardless. Good luck!

Dr. Shelly, thank you so much ! I received my BSN from UMSL and had a fantastic experience with excellent teachers and education. I think for my graduate level courses I would definitely benefit from the face to face format. I have heard nothing but wonderful experiences from few people who have already graduated or are currently in the NP program. I think I have made my decision and know that I would get an excellent education at UMSL.

I actually graduated from UMSL about 10 years ago with my BSN! I'm not sure the difference with the MSN programs, but in applying for my undergrad the deciding factor for me was that UMSL students did clinicals through Barnes-Jewish, which IMO is superior to SLUH...and the money was just a bonus.....good luck on your decision!
