starting NP school

Does anyone out there have any pointers/advice for someone who is going to start NP school? Is there anything in particular I should be reviewing? My background is L&D and Quality/Risk Management, so I know the learning curve will be great and am nervous. Trying to read up on advanced pathophysiology...any book recommendations? I welcome any advice/suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your post BirkieGirl! You give me hope! It's refreshing to see someone doing it with 2 children and succeeding! Sometimes I wonder how I'm going to be able to balance work, school and a baby. I am lucky enough to work from home, but with that said, I don't get as much work done as I should with a baby in tow. My program is also half brick and mortar/half onlin, but I will only be part time (ie, 2 classes per semester). Good luck with the rest of your program!

Enjoy the break while you have! If you spend time on anything review cranial nerves, reflexes and what they asses, as well as generalized assessments. Know the correct anatomy terms. Look at stuff like eyes and ears and their anatomy. Learn your nursing basics well.... I know I had a pharm and patho class right out of the gate. I'm at the half way mark now, and typically review guidelines on diseases and preventative care in my spare time. Good luck!

It would have been nice to some how "ease" into the program, but my first course is Advanced Pharm. It's nice to have a bit of break right now, but I think it's making more anxious than at ease.

It is very doable, I have three children, from kindergarten to 8th grade, and they keep me busy and im taking 12 credits a semester full time study and working 24 hours a week. Talk about busy! But it is doable, main thing is to stay on top of things. If its one thing ive learned it is to stay ahead of the 8 ball, once you fall behind, good luck its miserable. Best wishes!

I have enjoyed a review guide called Pharmacology Recall. It's pretty to the point and gives you the highlights about meds. Doesn't go into details but if you kind of cross reference with your pharm book on stuff you don't understand I think it'd work well (I just got this book last year after pharm).

Also if you need to refresh on information since you've been in L&D it might not hurt to go ahead and get some review CD's if you can afford it. It might not hurt to get one that's a few years old to save money for now...then get an updated set closer to graduation. The different presenters in the review CD's really break things down well! I am currently listening to Hollier (APEA) and I really enjoy her stories and style!

GOOD LUCK! And as others said it wouldn't hurt to try your best to relax now and spend time with family. You'll be in a hole the next few years....
