Samford University FNP Program?

Has anyone out there attended Samford University's FNP Program? I would like feedback on how you like the classes, instructors, etc.

I am heading to orientation this August, any suggestions on what hotel to stay at? Restaurants to try, and maybe some local attractions to visit while in town?

Anyone willing to provide their admission statistics? I will be a new grad with no experience, planning to apply in August 2014? My current GPA is a 3.67 -- Is that competitive?

Does anyone know if for the coming semester they have switched to the 11th edition of Bates, it's available on Amazon but it's like $75 more that the 10th edition.

Hello robbnp22:

I was wondering how the lectures are structured at Samford. Do they have discussion questions or are they recorded lectures that the student watches?

Mairead 07, I'M in Samford FNP program and yes we have recorded lectures and power points ...We have discussion posting (only one post per module ) in patho class only . No discussion in assessment and statistics. We have proctored exams though...Lol ...hope that helps ...goodluck

Hello hiessien:

Thank you for the info. How is it going for you with your clinicals. I work 7:30am to 3:30pm and am worried when it comes to clinicals how I am going to fit the time in. Are the books for patho pharmacology and Health assessment the same?

For Patho I have McCance & Heuthers 6th edition

For Pharm I have Edmunds & Mayhew 3rd edition

For Health asses I have Bickley & Szilagyi 10th ed

I would like to get a head start on reading.

Mairead 07,

The books for patho and assessment are the same except the assessment text is the 11th edition. I had the 10 edition for my BSN and only bought the pocket guide version of the 11th edition. So far l,m using the 10 th edition and it seems to adequate. Not sure of the pharm book . I have not done it yet and taking 3 courses concurrently is pretty overwhelming.

For the clinicals, you will have to change your work schedule becos most family practice clinics are open during the day . The chair at Samford actually told us you cannot work 9-5 during clinicals . Personnally , l just went part time at my job so l can have 3 days during the week for school stuff .

Hey ! I was looking at attending Samford's FNP program in January 2015. Can anybody tell me if the statistics class is proctored or not ? Thanks ! :)

Hi Wwyers 7842531

I'm currently attending samford FNP program and doing advanced statistics. It is not proctored. We have about 6 quizzes for the entire semester and a group project ..our professor is awesome ...she makes statistics doable given that we are taking it concurrently with patho and physical assessment. You will have study materials for each quiz and as long as you read the text, power points and listen to the lectures for each module, taking the quiz is a breeze. Hope that helps ..

Hiessien, thank you so much for the reply, very helpful ! Right now I'm finishing my BSN and of course statistics is one of my weak points. I'm happy two hear that it's doable, especially with taking other classes ! How do you like the program so far?

Wwyers ...

Samford school of nursing generally has excellent reviews ...I enjoy the FNP program so far ....l transfered from Ohio University to Samford and the difference is like night and day. It makes a lot of difference when the FNP faculty is 100% practicing NPs compared to professors with PHDs. Our teachers so far are very involved and care about the students...l don't feel like lm teaching myself like l did with Ohio University and they both on line programs ...lt requires a lot of reading and taking quizes every week for the 3Ps courses but you have a lot of support from the faculty to succeed.

Resurrecting this thread. *huzzah!*

I'm a BSN RN looking forward to becoming a FNP. I see that Hiessen speaks highly of the program. I like to think of myself of as a good student, (3.6 for ASN and 4.0 for BSN), how difficult is the program in comparison to obtaining their BSN? What makes me nervous is if they group difficult classes together such as patho, physical assessment and pharmacology as one group and must be taken together. I feel that this is a weed out method. Roughly, how many hours are you studying? Are there videos and presentations on the school site for learning or is it all textbook and discussion based only?

Importantly, how is it finding preceptors? I live in Long Island, NY, I haven't really spoken or network with many FNPs, mainly ACNPs.
