Clinicals are an essential part of any Family Nurse Practioner (FNP) program. It gives students the opportunity build their skills set and gain hands on experience. Each student is paired with a highly skilled provider (NP, CRNA, MD and/or PA), who not only shares their extensive knowledge but also guide FNP students on their journey from novice to independent health care provider. Clinical hours can be completed in a variety of health care settings, including private family practice, nursing homes, long term care facilities, hospitals, urgent care centers, and outpatient clinics (community, specialty, OB/GYN, pediatric, etc).

MSN programs vary in their approach to finding clinical placement sites. Some programs provide clinical placement services, while others require their students to secure their own clinical sites throughout their program. There are pros and cons to each approach. On one hand if your school finds your clinical sites, that's one less thing you have to worry about. On the other hand this leaves you at the mercy of your program. Depending on the program you can be placed up to 2 hours away one-way (and students can't refuse placement due to transportation or distance). If your FNP program requires that you find your own clinical sites, you'll have more influence on where and with whom you will be placed. However this can be a very stressful and time consuming process, and last time I checked, time was the last thing you had available in graduate school!

In this weeks vlog you get to see how I went from 3 clinical placement sites to none! Some highlights include

  • Clinical placement drama!
  • Class updates
  • Will I or won't I find a clinical site in time?
