Feeling down about school....

Is it normal to feel so overwhelmed and defeated that you second guess your decision about school? I am not happy with my schooling the past few quarters and I want to transfer to the online program as that is how I did all my degrees in the past. I am getting turned down left and right for clinical sites. I am also tired of hearing "stop thinking like a nurse" but I am a nurse~~!! I also hate that in clinical's I have to be so robotic and show no personality. I feel that is one of my best attributes of being a nurse. Is this the way it is going to be as a FNP? It's like seeing people on a conveyor belt!

I am on my 8th class out of 13....so I guess I will not be able to transfer somewhere else...

Thanks for reading my rant ;)

I'm so sorry about your experience!

I'm nowhere near an NP, so perhaps it isn't my place to chime in, but I've had a personal experience that may be encouraging.

While I was in my BSN (as a second-degree student) one of my professors, who also happened to be a family friend, was just starting her career as an NP. She had been a nurse for about 30 years before deciding to get her NP degree in her 50s. One day I sat in her office venting about how frustrated and incompetent I felt in my BSN program. She shared that she felt the same way; after feeling entirely confident and competent as a seasoned nurse, she was feeling deflated in her NP role and wondered if she had made a mistake.

One year later, I met up with her again, and when she talked about being an NP she was practically glowing. Even though the transition sucked, becoming an NP was a very fulfilling experience once she got her footing and found her niche.

Hang in there! I think it'll get better :shy:

Thanks for sharing your story...I just hope I didn't make a mistake as I always ever wanted to be was a CNM..I guess I can finish the FNP and get another post-master certificate for CNM!

Does your program have a CNM degree? Maybe you can ask about changing paths or getting a dual degree (if there's overlapping coursework).

Wishing you all the best!

"Stop thinking like a nurse" is role transition - and I think it is something that all of us who are NP students struggle with at times. There is no reason to stop exhibiting the traits that make nurses such great patient care advocates/providers. You just have to apply it at a different level. Good luck, you can do this!!

Yes, the next few quarters I transitioned over! I was just frustrated as it was my first practicum and now I am done! I feel confident I made the transition in school now I have to do it by myself!
