I was just wondering if any of your programs require hours to be with an NP or if you are able to use MD or DO as your preceptors.

My program prefers NPs. That is what we are aiming for and wanting to learn that specific role in conjunction with the nursing model right? BUT they will allow MDs or DOs for some hours. I'm not far enough to know how many Dr. Hours they will allow or in what areas. But I would check specifically with your program.

My program prefers NPs as well. Unfortunately, I cannot find any. I have enough doctors to do twice the amount of hours I need, but NPs are hard to find. I have tried everything I can think of. My state website only lists 2 NPs; 1 is in a specialty so I can't use him, and the other double booked me with another student and backed out at the last minute (that was really stressful!). I have doctors who have sent out emails to multiple NPs stating they are my sponsoring physician and that I have a job within the hospital system, but everyone says they are not taking students. I have tried cold calling and stopping in....

I don't know what else to do. I don't understand why NPs are so unwilling to precept and doctors are all gung ho!.

My program requires 51% of my hours to be with an NP, but I have only been able to line up 270hrs with NPs so far. I'm in a hard spot because I have two job offers for when I graduate, but I can't graduate without the hours! The two certifying bodies only require that clinical hours are done, but they do not specify that they have to be done with NPs, and at this point, I would be happy to just get them done.

Does anyone have any other ideas on how to find preceptors???

My program required one segment (Family, Women's Health, Pedi etc) to be with an NP. The rest can be with MD, DO or PA..

Can you travel and do a bunch of hours somewhere else? A lot of my classmates went and did hours in another state. I loved my MD preceptors, but you definitely need at least half of your hours with NPs, because we think and work differently.

Mine allows a small percentage (I think it's 20%) with MD/DO, no PA. The rest have to be with an NP. I also have to keep with certain percentages for peds, geri, etc. I would agree with the suggestion of looking in nearby cities as well. Might want to tap your network of NPs and/or providers you know personally and ask for references.
