ANCC new certifications

Can anyone explain to me if there is another agency besides ancc who does psych certifications? I am an adult np and am contemplating doing a post-masters psych program. I have no interest or desire in working with psych children. So I see the ANCC is retiring the adult psych certification. Is ther another board to take besides ancc?

On the same thread, can a bunch of nurses do more to screw up nursing? Between DNP and now this their constant desire to make nursing change is not helping! Just a thought.

Agree that the Consensus Model has thrown a monkey wrench in a lot of folks plans.

First make sure you don't let your ANP lapse - its also one of the titles being "retired."

Although the AANP hasn't jumped not the bandwagon of the ANCC Consensus Model, I would bet they would.

You might have to bite the bullet and do the Family Psych NP.

Anyone else with some other idea?

I am a long-time child psych CNS whose certification (and entire specialty!) is also being "retired," and I completely agree with you. I'm also v. annoyed about the ongoing revamping of the certification titles. I'm now a 'PMHCNS-BC" -- puhleeeese!! I work in a big academic medical center, and get mocked (good-naturedly, thank goodness) for the ridiculous string of letters after my name (it's longer than my name!) What on earth was wrong with "CS"?? -- it was clean, simple, elegant, and everyone knew what it meant. As far as I'm concerned, if people want to know what my specific specialty is, they can ask me.

Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any other organization that offers psych certification(s). I would looooooooove to just be able to tell the ANCC to go jump in the lake ...

I did adult/gero in my program and just never took the gero boards- I would now with gero population and am glad I took the gero courses because I am sometimes shocked by what some providers are doing with their gero patients meds.

I wonder if with the new plan, the schools will be struggling even more to find clinical placements- will everyone who was doing gero only now have to do adult clinical too? Good luck to all those trying to find placements!!

Good for you on doing the Adult and Gero from the get go. You should be good to go even with the new AGNP credential ANCC is forcing down our throats. For the rest of us who didn't have the Gero component in our program (like my straight up Adult ACNP), our only resort is to keep our certs current or we go back to school and get the Gero component to qualify for the AGNP/AGCNP exams. Yeah, I'm not sure how schools are dealing with the change. My alma mater stopped admitting students for the ANP, ACNP, and GNP programs indefinitely until the new and improved curriculum is finalized.

Elkpark, i don't even use the ACNP-BC letters at work since all the NP's in our group are ACNP's anyway. We just use the letters NP and luckily that's also the state designated title for nurse practitioners here.

We use APN already in IL, so the new APRN won't be a biggie for us either.
