Soon to be LPN Moving to SC, school advise please!

U.S.A. South Carolina

Published

I recently graduated (this May!) from LVN school out here in Southern California. My original plan was to finish my LVN and then go to my school's LVN-RN program (due to the crazy wait lists out here). Unfortunately that has changed since my husband, who is a Marine, is heading out to Beaufort (Perris Island) to become a Drill Instructor and myself and my three boys will be heading out there in October. I plan to work as an LPN for a bit but want to continue to my RN/BSN. It seems like there aren't many schools in the immediate Beaufort area (according to discovernursing) so I'm going to list the few I've considered, along with some questions, and then hopefully you ladies could help me out and even suggest other schools nearby because I have absolutely no idea how far a lot of these schools really are from Beaufort! My grades are: 3.2 from Purdue University (Bachelor's in Athletic Training), and a 3.68 from my LVN program and a 3.8ish from all of my pre-reqs.

Technical College of the Lowcounty: I have everything needed to get in but it's been 14 years since I took Algebra (in college) so apparently I have to re-take the math? Would it better just to get a book and study up to take the Compass test?

MUSC: I have a Bachelor's already and all of my pre-reqs except for Statistics done (well, I took it but it was in my last semester of college and I totally blew it off and got a D :/). I'm wondering how intensive this is - I've got 3 little boys and while I've done practically all of my LVN by myself with my husband deployed, I am nervous that the accelerated program may be a bit much?

Univeristy of South Carolina, Beaufort: It looks like a new program and although I really don't want to spend another 4 years in school I was wondering if they allow you to test out of some of the classes?

My biggest dilemna of all of this is that we will only be in S.C. for 3 years due to the wonderful nature of the military. Obviously the 4 yr program is a bit rougher and would require me and my boys to stay behind for a little while but we're pretty flexible.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this! I have found the my previously carefully calculated plan from LVN-RN-BSN went down the drain real quick and it is frustrating to have to figure things out again so I really appreciate all your advice!

Regards,

Kristin

I am a second degree nursing graduate from USC-Columbia and it only took 3 years since I already had the pre-reqs. It could be 2 1/2 if they offer classes/clinicals during the summer at USC-Beaufort.

I have heard that MUSC's accelerated program is intense but it is a good school. If you are trying for RN/BSN then Tech would not be an option since its an RN/ADN program but I do hear that its a good program as well.

hope this somewhat helps. :-)
