MUSC Trauma Unit

U.S.A. South Carolina

I am thinking about relocating to charleston sc and plan on working in their Surgical Trauma Unit. I now work at a very busy CVICU at a level I hospital in VA and just want to know some information about MUSC.

How are the patients? Is it a real busy ICU or are the patients not that sick. What types of trauma do they see? Any information would be great. I want to stay in a ICU that gets to see the sickest of the sick.

Hello, I live in Summerville, a town about 20 minutes outside Charleston. I guess house's range from 150's and up. Of course living in the downtown area is very expensive. I was able to afford a place right out of college so I do not believe you will have a problem. I believe you can find an apartment around Charleston for around 800 for a nice one (2bdrm's). I hope this was helpful. Let me know if I can help.

I respect your desire to work in a busy unit. But I question your reasons. Seeking out the trauma and the very ill patient seems to me that you may have a need for attention and a little bit of a "hero" complex. If you are looking for a specialty be it ccu/icu/cvicu/trauma/transplant go the right reasons. To make a satisfying quiet change in a persons life because that is what you desire. Best of luck

Sorry but just because I like taking care of very ill patients does not mean I have a hero complex. Maybe you should just mind your business. I personally like critical care and love the adrenaline from sick post op hearts and fresh traumas, this does not mean I need attention. It would be no different if I asked if MUSC had a really good Oncology unit. No difference, its just what I like.

wow... just... wow....

I would hate to see the population shift if everyone who was in trauma/emergency centers for the high of it, moved away because they did not fit the "quiet change" mentality suggested here. I think the ER for one may be a bit on the empty side. :)

To pawashrn: What an absurd judgement to make.:banghead: Shame on you to question another nurse's intentions. I assume you are a psych nurse.

I had my preceptorship which just ended in May (i just graduated from MUSC) in the STICU and it was AWESOME. I can guarantee you that they will not even consider hiring a new grad, esp who has no connection to the unit what so ever. I learned more in my 8 weeks in there than i learned all of nursing school. The staff is great too. Also, to "skygirlhil", MUSC really isn't hiring new grads, period. They are in debt from the "impressive" campus which blows. If you move to charleston, DON'T live downtown unless you want to pay ridiculous amounts of money for houses that have extremely high electricity bills. Live on James Island...trust me, I went to undergrad @ college of charelston too and i've migrated all over!!

MUSC is hiring new grads. Jobs maybe a little tighter now (but I'm not sure) and the new grads who worked as techs while in school are probably getting the jobs because they are more experienced, already in the system and the managers already know their work ethic. There are at least two new grads in the unit I work in and its only 7 beds. As for STICU, I was hired there as a new grad back in 07. I've travelled since and am on my 4th ICU, still by far my favorite pts.
