Greenville Tech RN refresher Course

Hi everyone. Has anyone out there taken the RN refresher course offered by Greenville Tech in Greenville, SC?

Was wondering if you ended up taking this refresher course and if so how it went??

Yes...it was GREAT! I was out for 14 years, so I really needed to get caught up on all the changes! It was very challenging, yet so worth it!

I'm out of state so wouldn't be able to do the clinical component- do you think just the online content review would be useful by itself or was it really the skills labs that made it so useful?

The courses in my area are $1200 and $2400. A lot of $ if I'm not certain of finding employment even after taking the course.

So on that note- have you been able to find a job since you took the class? If yes, did the employer seem to think your course was instrumental in being hired??

Even if you are out of state it can be worked out...you just have to find a site who is willing to work with Greenville Tech on your clinical rotation. I discovered some "bumps" along the way that almost derailed me, but it all worked out. Since I only was licensed in SC before, the SC Board of Nursing told me to get my SC license reactivated, and then endorse into my new state (GA). What I didn't find out - despite calls to both boards - was that GA would not endorse me until I had worked 500 hours since I had been inactive for years prior. I found this out 3 days before my refresher course started!!! I HIGHLY suggest speaking to your state board about any specifics that might keep them from endorsing your new license in their state. GA and SC have very different refresher courses and don't support the other...I couldn't take a GA refresher course and get my SC license back...and GA wouldn't honor my SC refresher course! I don't know where you are located...but find all this out before you pay for the course! I do know that GTC works with other state board of nursings as an approved refresher course...you just need to see if your next state you are attempting to endorse into will accept their refresher course...I don't know what I would have done if I had not lived near SC and had the option of working in SC.

As far as my career, I first went to work with DHEC (public health office for SC) and gave the H1N1 vaccines. It was a good re-entry back into nursing after being out for 14 years. The job was a temporary job and concluded in the Spring...I took the summer off and just started at a hospital in SC...about 30 min. from where I live...about a month ago. Wow...a lot has changed but I'm catching up. Loving being back with patients and am getting used to being a working mom...eventually I will go part-time, but for orientation am full time trying to learn as much as I can. Good luck to you!

I actually have an active license, so don't legally need to take a class to work. So fortunately won't have those types of issues. BUT am thinking I need to take the course because I've been out for so long AND am hoping a refresher course would make a recruiter/HR person actually look at my resume - otherwise they'd seen a 10 year gap and move right along.

That said, I don't even know with a refresher course if the employment market would be favorable since I've been out so long. I see all those new RNs struggling to find work and almost all job postings ask for 1-2 years recent clinical experience. I know it wouldn't hurt to take a course but also don't know if the $800 dollars ($1200 or $2400 in my are!) is what it will take to get me back into the field.

I do know that I'm NOT interested in inpatient acute care. I was really hoping for something part time in outpatient or home health setting. I've applied to a couple dozen jobs with no reply. BUT don't have $1200 worth of confidence that a refresher program would make a difference....

Sigh...

I am in the similar situation. I have moved to GA from Texas. I do not have an active license and I have not worked in 10 years. I wanted to take the GA refresher course and they say I have to have an active license to take the course. At one time I had a SC license. The information I am getting is that I have to reactivate one of my states (which requires a refresher course and clinicals) and then in order to get a GA license I have to take their refresher course and do clinicals. I ask both states what am I supposed to do with my family and three children while I am doing clinical out of state and they told me it was a bad situation but I would have to take them with me. It sounds like very similar information that you received. Thanks for any suggestions.

You mentioned being licensed in SC before; were you licensed in any other state besides that one?
