I've done a few homework problems and I just wanted to see if I'm doing them correctly.

Order: Vistaril 50 mg po prn 3-4 times daily

Label: Vistaril/hydroxyzine pamoate (equivilant to)

25 mg/5 ml

hydroxyzine HCl

Oral Susspension

120 ml

Give____tsp

I got 10 ml and converted it to tsp and got 2 tsp as my answer. I wasn't sure what to do with the 120 ml. I'm not bad at math....I just don't know where all the numbers go in setting up the formula.

Your answer is correct. The 120 mL is just the total amount of Vistaril/hydroxyzine pamoate that the pharmacy has sent. It is not crucial to this problem. What is important is the concentration of the medication: 25 mg/5 ml.

I worked the problem this way:

50 mg
(dose desired)
/25 mg
(dose on hand)
x 5 mL
(amount the dose on hand comes in)
/1 x 1 tsp/5mL
(conversion factor)
=
2 tsp
(amount to give)

ml= 5ml x 50mg = 10ml

25mg

10ml=2tsp

answer is 2tsps
