Hi! I know that there are several of us who just started in school nursing over the last several weeks. I just wanted to check in to see how everyone is doing!

I've completed my second full week on the job. Fortunately, I did have some time with the outgoing nurse (being transferred). I have 3 schools in a K-8 district. I've been spending the majority of my time digging through drawers, locating resources, and researching the students with the most emergent needs. I'm about half-way through contacting those parents to introduce myself and update their care plans. I'm starting to get the hang of who are the frequent flyers to the health rooms (amazing how quickly that one is coming!!)

I left a job that I loved for school nursing, but I really think that I'm going to love this job! I can't wait to dig in and start some health programs and get into the classrooms!

The frosting on the cake is-- I was supposed to work a LONG weekend this weekend, including a double on Saturday night. Now, I'm not working nights, weekends, holidays...in fact, I get a week off for Spring Break!! Woo Hoo!:yeah:

How are you all doing? What strategies are you using to "attack" your new job? Let's stick together!!!

Hi There,

I'm also brand new to school nursing. I started in Oct. last year, and took a maternity leave from november to february. I received zero orientation from the nurse who left. She dodged my phone calls and wouldn't come in to give orientation. So I'm on my own, but very excited about this job. I know I'm going to love it! I'm responsible for 600 students in four schools pre-school to 12th grade. I'm in a consolidated rural school dist in wyoming so I drive a lot. This district has only had a school nurse position for a couple of years and the program - well there isn't really a program- It's a little overwhelming. I could use some help!:nurse:
