New Nurse-School or Hospital?

Specialties School

Hello,

I am looking for some advice. I am a new grad LPN and I have interviews set up next week for a hospital (rehab unit) as well as an assistant to the school nurse at a high school. Im really excited about both potential opportunities. I am looking for advice as far as what route you fellow nurses think I should take. I really enjoy working with the age group in a high school and I think I would enjoy the school setting. The hours seem great too. However, part of me feels if I get the hospital position I should take it because of the practical skills I will be utilizing and learning. Its too soon to tell because who knows if Ill get offered either position but I'm just weighing the pros and cons of both. Thanks so much!!

Everyone told me when I graduated to get medical-surgical experience in. Do i think they are wrong? No. But if you think a school nurse is more of your cup of tea by all means go for it, especially because jobs like that don't come up everyday. Someone told me, "never be worried about changing jobs and positions, thats why you get trained, they will train you for what you need to know!" If the school nurse thing does not work out, you shouldn't have a horrible time trying to find a entry level RN position in a hospital, and they train you!

Just my advice,

Follow your gut and your heart!! Goodluck :)

Wow, I think being with another nurse in a school would be perfect. I continually feel alone and find myself saying" I wish I had another nurse with me or work with another school nurse some place. I have a nurse friend who did just that - she left an elementary school grades PK-2 and got a job as a school nurse float in a small city. She loves it as she says she is never alone and gets to go from school to school helping all the other nurses. Your offer to be with another school nurse sounds wonderful to me. Just a thought!

Thank you so much for the responses! Very good advice and insight...just what I was looking for :)
