New nurse help- District school nurse

Specialties School

Hello Fellow Experienced Nurses,

I just accepted a district school nurse position in the SF Bay Area. I have no prior R.N. experience, but I have 2 children of my own & have worked as an office manager in the past. I just found out that I will be in charge of 4 schools, one elementary, one middle, one H.S. & one adult (special needs) school. The amount of students will be between 2100-2500, & that is half of what the nurses had last year.

I would be entirely grateful for any advise on how to prepare for this new adventure.

Thanks a million!!

Let me get this straight...are you a new grad?

Hello and welcome! If you are a new grad it can be difficult starting off as a school nurse but doable. Myself and a few others here have been down that road. However, it depends on how much support you have at your district and training. I was lucky and had a great support network and an awesome training put on by a local school district for new school nurses. Check out your local CSNO branch and look for local meetings. I'm in the same area but I haven't looked in to anything my local branch is doing yet. I might also depend on which side of the Bay you are on. The NASN is fabulous (worth the membership) and so are the amazing people here in this section of AN. Read through the threads and take notes. Search for School Nursing Manuals from other schools if that may help you as well. San Francisco USD has a good online School Health Manual that you can search for. San Diego Unified does as well.

Good luck and take care of yourself!
