MIC key button???

Can you flush a mic key button without hooking extension line to it? Just hook the syringe directly to the button???

You can give medication & flush a MicKey staight into the device as long as it is a small amount. I prefer not to, using the short line instead, as it can put too much pressure on the device, the line enables you to give it slower and with more control. It is also a be a safety buffer.

Also, it needs to be done with a luer slip tip syringe, the tip on a regular oral medication syringe is too big.

While not ideal it is usually the least intrusive, least disruptive of getting a med into a child in the classroom or out of the way corner.

I prefer to use an extension for safety reasons.

Well, the mom only sent two extension sets. She gets sick at her stomach sometimes. She has had the fundo, but mom thinks it has stretched some. She has CP, so if she gets sick I am to hook her up to the extension and drain it. I have a tip that fit on the end of my syringe before inserting it in the button. My orders say flush with 60 cc...which seems a lot to me!

Sixty ml for a child? Is this with every med or a water bolus? I would question that order with the doctor unless you can determine that the care plan states extra water is to be given. Depending upon the size of the child, we have always had orders to flush with 5 to 10 ml. For adults, it is usually 10-30 ml, notwithstanding water boluses.

She doesn't take any med or feed through the tube. It is just there in case. The 60 cc is once a day I believe. Still seems like a LOT to me!

60cc = 2oz which really isn't very much.

That kind of a volume does need to be done via gravity with one of the extension tubes.

A couple cc of med plus a 5cc flush direct to the mic-key is fine, any more than that is not.

I called the DR to confirm the order of 60cc. The nurse also said that it was fine to flush straight from the button. It takes me a min because I go REALLY slow!!! PS...I HATE DOING THIS!!!!!:uhoh3:
