I am finishing up a project on school nurses. I have not come across any male school nurses. Are there any?? There has to be. :p Can anyone tell me anything about men in the school nurse role? Thank you.

Yes, there are male school nurses. I know several. You could cotnact NASN http://www.nasn.org to get a percentage.

I am not sure what you are meaning "about" men in school nurse role???

If you wanted to interview any, you could post to the school nurse listserv

I was only hoping to find out some personal opinions about male school nurses. For example, do they stay in that role or find it has some bias attached to it. I am hoping for any information regarding the issue. In my personal experience, I have never seen a male school nurse. So, I need some help with the topic. Thank you.

I personally have never heard of any bias against male school nurses.

I did find an article doing a Google search about a school board that delayed hiring a male nurse as his " presence at the school-and particularly any interaction with female students-would be inappropriate", and was blindsided by the critcism. They ended up making him an ofer, but he;'d accepted a school nurse position in another district by then.

I just hired our District's first male nurse and am so happy to have a male presence in the health office for both sexes of students. I have not respolved how in our conservative community of how to deal wioth the issue of maturation education or exams of female students. In any other practice setting it would not matter but schools????

I think, therefore I am so I must exist

I'm male ... and a school nurse (but on paternity leave at the moment) and also australian (qld) so our nursing role seems to be a little bit different from others as we are more referral, primary prevention, health promotion and a wee tad of counselling ( no physical nursing thank you, my background is psychiatry). being male helps and hinders but i have a female colleague at a nearby school to refer to if necessary.

I'm a male school nurse at the American International School in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The superintendant had concerns at first about a male nurse in a Muslim country, plus there are 40 different cultural groups here, many of them Asian. My wife, who is also here as a special ed teacher told him that there would be no problem. I just put all the feminine protection devices, ha, ha in the toilet and told all the teachers to let their female students know. I also put a sign in the toilet letting them know if I found any pads in the toilet instead of the blue pail that it would not be too funny for them if I came and got them out of class to clean up the mess. I've really had no problems. Just a few days ago a couple girls asked me if I had any waterproof pads for swimming class, LOL!:roll

Right off the bat, I let the kids know that I'm "Mr. Nurse to you."
