I just need to vent a little - I had a student who is known for behavioral issues come into my office after vomitting fine. One of his behavioral issues is that he make himself vomit and I should mention that he was escorted by the classroom aide saying she thought he was . I checked him thoroughly, no fever, looks okay, says he feels fine, says his stomach doesn't hurt, no abdominal tenderness... etc.. so I sent hom back to class as he would be leaving in about 30 minutes. I even followed up with a quick call to mom to let her know what had happened, as it had been a little while since he had done this. I walk out into the corridor to find his sub teacher for the day running out of the classroom upon seeing me and asking me very curtly why i didn't send him home as he had vomitted. I calmly explained to her that this student has behavioral issues and sometimes makes himself vomit. I went over my assessment with her - says he feels fine, no fever and so on and she continued to agrue with me that he should have been sent home and that she subbed for this class once or twice before and never saw him do that. I finally shut her down by re-explaining that he has this type of behavior and sometimes will vomit for no apparent reason and that sending him home when he does it only reinforces the behavior. I also explained that I have been working on this issue all year with him. Grrr....:banghead:

I would be tempted to tell her I am not obligated to explain my actions to her

firefightingRN you did exactly what I would have done! It is not the place of the substitute to challenge your assessment and treatment plan after you clearly explained the past history of the student.

I agree.....you did the correct thing. You know the student better than she does.

Feel assured that you did the right thing. Way to Go !!:saint:
