How do you like your nursing students?

I am going to my first school site rotation tomorrow morning...not as prepared as I would like to be, because my teacher just switched it about an hour ago! Paper work isn't that detailed so I am ready to soak up all that I can from my school nurse. What do you look for from a student nurse and have you had any bad or good experiences with them? Any tips? Thanks so much :)

I didn't see this until just today, so my guess is that you've already had your first day. I hope you had fun!

My tips:

Ask questiions

Think about how chronic illness effects the child here in the school environment v. when you've seen kids in the hospital. Does this give you a better picture to care for the whole child? I think school nursing rotations are nice for students because it enables "big picture" thinking. Take time to learn about 504s and IHPs.

Get involved

Spend time in the classroom if you can. Think about health topics so that you can teach. Every moment in the school is a teachable moment -- especially in the nurse's office, because often the school nurse is often the only medical professional in the building! We teach the kids how to manage illness, we teach prevention to kids and staff alike, we teach parents, we teach board members about health policy, the list goes on and on.

Have fun

Think outside the box, and you'll do great!

Marinated and grilled over an open flame...........

Crunch: That is awesome!!!!!!

Adorable son: I just saw this too, be caring, helpful, but not hovering, ask ask ask questions.......

I had so much fun! Most of the students this week were saying things like "aw great I'm at the school, how boring" but it wasn't at all and I had four pages of notes and turned them into one heck on an essay compared to my fellow classmates who didn't see how important school nurses are. Thanks for replying I hope I get to go back and I will ask about 504s and IHPs :)
