Becoming a School Nurse

Specialties School

I'm currently thinking of going back to school to get my BSN then my creditial to become a school nurse. I was just wondering if anyone could give me some ideas of what exactly the role of the school nurse is. I once was told that the RN has a group of schools that she is responsible for. Do school nurses have the same schedule as students (summer off)? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Look around the school nurse section here and you will find out a lot. every state differs in what is required to be a school nurse. Also each state differs in their student to nurse ratio is. Apply to work as a sub in one of your local districts to see how things are in your state.

I work in 1 school with about 1,000 students. I work the teachers schedule and make the same salary as them. I love what I do. We do a lot of health teaching, screenings, first aid and LOTS of paper work. We make sure immunizations are up to date and work with the other staff to help kids at risk. I work closely with the guidance counselors, social workers and school psychologists to help the kids.

Welcome to our group. Please keep in touch with us while you make the decisions to go back to school. I went back after being an RN for 17 years. It was worth it.
