Asthma issues and sending kids home....

I'm a new nurse and a new school nurse but I have over 30 years experience in dealing with asthma. Today this child was sent to my office with wheezing. It was audible with out a stethoscope but upon auscultation this kid was tight. I sent him home last week, asking for med orders and albuterol but this family refuses. Today the mother refused to take him home, said he was fine and caused a scene. Luckily my principal is amazing and sent her packing. How do you All handle wheezing kids with no albuterol? Thanks! -mysixlittleones

I agree and have had to do this twice with the same student. Off to the ER you go kiddo.

Mom refuses to get him a rescue inhaler. The ER doc and I know each other and he made it crystal clear that this child needed an inhaler.

Still haven't gotten one though . . so, if mom is poor, why would she choose an ER visit over a rescue inhaler? This kiddo will go to the ER again when his asthma kicks up.

Specializes in kids.

'cause she aint paying either way!

Thank you everyone!

I lovepoodles---holy cow!!

Just to post an update.......I filed with Children Protective Services for medical neglect. Two weeks later I still have no inhaler!! I have been keeping the child in for recess and no gym to help prevent an exacerbation. I have a feeling CPS is dropping the ball though. They have been to the home, we have had a meeting with the principal and still nothing. I am impatiently waiting.......
