RN degree requirements in MD area?

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

Published

Hello!

Just started my A.A. RN degree (associates) and am panicking a bit because I'm told that most hospitals only hire new hires with BSNs, so I will not be able to find a nursing job after I graduate. I was also told that this varies by location. Is this true in the MD/DC/VA area? Will I find a job after working my @ss off for 2 years?! Help!

When applying for a job, wherever it may be, if you read the description and requirements of the job, it usually says BSN required if that is the case. If it does not specify you can call HR or the nurse manager. Where I am, in FL, most hospitals will hire you with an associates but want you to have a BSN within 3 years of employment as most hospitals are aiming to become magnet hospitals.

What are the job ads saying in your area -- for the types of jobs that you will be interested in? Look at the ads now to see what types of jobs you would be eligible for as a new grad with an Associate's Degree -- understanding that the trend is for greater emphasis on the BSN as time passes. That will give you a clue as to what will probably be realistic to expect in a couple of years.
