I'm in a RN to BSN program in Jacksonville FL. I need 30 clinical (volunteer) hours in the community. Does anyone have any ideas of some areas or programs I can look for volunteer hours. We cannot attend support groups or anything in the hospital.

thanks!

How about a nonprofit agency in your area? The nurses tend to work in the communities. hth's

What is the criteria for your volunteer work? Does it have to incorporate nursing skills or just be community volunteer hours?

Some of the volunteer activities I have done over the years and some of the things my nursing school classmates did are:

Volunteered at the:

Free Hypertension Clinic in our city

Free General Medical clinic

First Aid station at the State Fair

Annual Health Fair (Sponsored and advertised by a local TV station)

A health fair in a nearby underprivileged county

Local Children's Hospital

Battered Women's Shelter

Local Food Bank

Meals on Wheels

Churches in our area take turns housing the homeless for a week in the winter and providing a hot cooked dinner and pack them a lunch for the next day. We helped cook the meal, serve it and then ate with them, listened, empathized and offered them information about other available community resources. Some volunteers sleep overnight at the church as well.

work with scouts earning badges in areas of first aid, fire safety, or emergency preparedness

assisted with the christmas angel tree booth at the local mall

Check with your local blood drive and see if they have any volunteer work to be done.

Volunteer with any drive to support a medical cause such as a walk for breast cancer, or answer phones duing a local radiothon or telethon

Our city has an annual volunteer day to clean up the river banks, some students participated in this.

Some volunteered at the local animal shelter.

Look under Social and Human Services in the yellow pages and check with some of those agencies.
