New grad nurse

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

I am trying to get opinions on starting out as a new grad in a specialty area such as labor and delivery, or just starting out getting my basic med/surg basics. At the hospitals I am interested in there is an availability for new grads to start in labor and delivery and I loved doing my precepting there.

Specializes in Prior military RN/current ICU RN..

I have been a nurse 10 years. I did first two med/surg and last 8 psych. Those two years still serve me well and facilities love seeing med/surg experience. It shows you can probably manage a lot of stress and have good time management. You are also familiar with a lot of medical conditions and terminology that makes you more valuable. Also you really learn to be calm when it gets intense.

I am not saying do it the way I did it, but for me it worked out great. When applying for grad school, jobs etc...it is great to have those two years under my belt. Just makes you a well rounded RN.

Specializes in Pedi.

I've been a nurse for 9 years. I have never worked med-surg and never intend to. I started out in pediatrics, the only specialty I ever had any interest in. Med-surg would not have helped me in the jobs I've done since- school, pediatric home visits or my current job as an infusion liaison in a pediatric hospital. In fact, it was my background in pediatrics that helped me get every job I've had.
