Best Way to Become an RN if you have a Bachelors Degree in Business

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

Published

Hello,

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and would like to make a career change into healthcare. I am also a mother of a small toddler and need to work full-time while attaining a degree that will allow me to become an RN. I'm looking for advice on the best way to do this. What are the advantages / disadvantages to getting an associates degree & obtaining an RN license, then getting a BSN later? Or would it be best to get a second bachelors in nursing right off the bat? Are there any online schools that enable you to get a second bachelors in nursing degree at your own pace, or schools that allow you to work and go to school at night? I live in the Portland, OR area. Help, please!

Actually, it was to the original poster ?

That's funny. Haha

I've been looking at Samuel Merritt ABSN, and it costs 52K, plus there are more prerequisites than other programs. So I'm kind of debating still.

I am the exception that proves the rule. I worked overnights .8 and attended school during the day. I can't say that I would do that with a young child in the home.

Taking your pre-reqs and applying for an ADN program would allow you to start NS about the time your child enters kindergarten which would make school much easier to coordinate.

So should I take all the pre-requisites first then apply for Accelerated BSN program? Thanks :)

Kanio,

You should check the requirements for application to the schools you are applying to. Some let you apply prior to completion of all pre-reqs some require you have them all done while some say you can have 1-3 pending, so it all depends. Most school ABSN FAQ websites answer this question.

Here is a list of ABSN schools, there are others not on this site...but it is a good start.

Accelerated BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) Programs

@dwaynea,

Thanks for recommending bestnursingdegree... I actually run the site, so just wanted to ask you which ABSN programs we're missing, so we can add them to our directory.

Feel free to shoot me any other comments you have on it!

Thanks again,

Joe

Joe, After careful review, I recant my words. Your website Best Nursing Degree | Directory of Nursing Programs is the most up to date listing out there. You have done a great job at keeping up with the ever changing world of the ABSN programs. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the kind words Dwayne!

Research the nursing programs in your area. Prepare for, and apply to the ones that best meet your needs, in this case, accelerated BSN or traditional BSN programs first, secondarily, ASN programs. Attend the program that accepts you or accepts your first or if several acceptances, best meets other criteria, such as transportation convenience.
