Will I be stuck as a Psych Nurse forever?

Some background on me: I am a new grad RN & started my first nursing job at the beginning of September at an inpatient mental health facility. I absolutely love my job as a Psych Nurse so far, and could see myself working here for a long time; however, I know people change as years go by and one day I might decide psych nursing is no longer for me. But will I be stuck in this job since I have no other experience?

I thought of getting a PRN position at a hospital to gain some skills on a med-surg unit, but 1) I had applied for every position I've seen & have had no luck in even snagging one single interview and 2) I know PRN positions usually want/require experience since they don't usually offer much of an orientation & I don't have that experience. So I'm kind of at a loss here.

I am not going to quit my current job that I love to find a med-surg job I may possibly hate just to get experience, but are there any other options out there for me to gain some skills, just in case psych nursing doesn't work out for me later on?

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

(Not to sound rude, but please, no lectures on "new nurses should always start on med-surg" or whatever. Yes, my teachers did say that all during school. Yes, I did apply for a thousand M/S positions. The only job offer I got was psych, so I took it, and I'm thrilled that I like it as much as I do.)

@Peppermint_RN, ADN, RN How is it going? I'm interviewing for a psych nursing job as my first position out of school... any insight?

I'm a new grad, and I took a position as a psych nurse. I already miss the medical side of it, though I do love psych. Would volunteering with the local life saving crew help me retain any skills?

I, too, have considered this, mostly because of the conversations that I have been having recently with the ED nurses at my facility. This weekend I started to get that "I want to try ED nursing!" itch. BUT! Not only ED nursing... ER trauma psych nursing. I know that would be a lot involved, but I'm trying to figure out where this feeling is coming from. I was considering another path, almost totally unrelated to nursing, but I was planning on continuing to keep working in my adolescent psych unit while I continued school for yet another career.

No, I don't think you are "stuck" psych nursing forever. Talk to staff at your facility, talk to your manager and find out if there are opportunities that you may be interested in trying.

One thing I found at my facility where were offer ECT, is that I am able to use a lot of my med/surg nursing skills there. It is a wonderful experience to push meds, place IVs, and feel all "nursey" again.

I've been in mental health for most of my RN career. I was a CNA for many years, then LPN in LTC while I completed my ADN. I then went on for the BSN. When I first passed NCLEX, I took a job in mental health and loved it! Still do almost 8yrs later. However, I would love to be able to develop the skills I barely learned in nursing school. I am wondering how to go about doing this because I'm pretty much the "mental health nurse" now. I found a skill brush up at the local community college, but couldn't get off of work. I planned to work my vacation this year around the class, but it wasn't offered. Now, I too am looking for some tips. I don't want to leave my current job and only work .8. Any pearls of wisdom?
